Developed by the team at Zenimax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor, whose previous work includes Mythic's well-received Dark Age of Camelot. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."

An in-depth look at everything from solo questing to public dungeons awaits in our enormous July cover story – as well as a peek at the player-driven PvP conflict that pits the three player factions against each other in open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne itself.

The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled to come out in 2013 for both PC and Macintosh.

could be good, could be terrible. I don't like the idea of elder scrolls not being a persistent world. (i.e: everything respawns and regenerates)

What kind of elder scrolls game would it be if you killed someone and they respawn 10 minutes later? Or you loot a house and 5 minutes pass and it's repopulated.

Porting the combat mechanics into a setting where it makes sense from a dungeon / group perspective will take some doing. I mean, currently the notion of right vs left triggers performing actions is useful enough within the context of a single player experience, but taking that and trying to connect those mechanics with other players for something like party healing... I'm curious how they approach this.

Moreover, the time setting is bad. From the description, it's literally during the events of Oblivion. It just doesn't make sense. What player factions? Where is the game going to be set?

It would be Farcry 2. :bleh:

Public dungeons sound like they could be pretty good, as in big named mobs possibly staying dead for longer than random generic ones.

Also, 3 factions =

Saw that coming a mile away. It was obvious that Bethesda would be doing something like that when Skyrim Online Mod got released

The essentially picked the very worst setting the Elder Scrolls is capable of. It's another trip to generic LOTR's environment that was so bland in Oblivion. They have so many continents to work with, why choose this one? That is, unless they revert it back to what it was originally supposed to be in the lore before they "magically" changed it to LOTR-lite.

Vvardenfell would be much better suited for a MMO since it has a lot of varying environments, an already rich lore/history and has a large group of factions to work with. That is, before they wrote that continent out of lore as well.

I don't know much about the Elder Scrolls lore, but are there groups that are represented by a dragon, a gryphon/hawk, and a lion? I'm assuming that's what the 3 things eating each other are for. I'm in the end, I'm expecting a **** load of things to be retconned.

That's a problem for almost all MMOs that apparently people just accept. You are often tasked with taking out a group of people who respawn immediately. Despite that, you are praised for your efforts, and assured that they've been defeated - despite them standing right in front of you.

I'm more interested to see if they can translate some of TES features into an MMO variety. Will they keep the skill system the same? Do you continue to improve skills just by using them? Etc, etc. Guess we'll find out as they start leaking info.

I am dissapoint :(
That is unless they are going to keep developing the SP series, but monies money and mmo's can make lots...

I'd rather they just take on the Skyrim multiplayer mod, or make the next elder scrolls game have a huge multiplayer/co-op component

set a millennium before the events of Skyrim

Skyrim was set hundreds of years after oblivion, this is back a thousand years and as with Skyrim/Oblivion I bet there's zero evidence of any kind of scientific/technological advancement.
In fact based on what the Dwemer were pumping out 1000's of years ago I'd say it's pretty clear Tamrielic society has long since peaked and is in a steady decline into extinction. Let Molag Bal have them imo, they're clearly not meant to survive.

As for the mmo, the two things that make TES games so special for me are a)massive sandbox and b) completely moddable. Don't see those making it into an mmo.

Although, it sounds like Matt Firor is trying to remake DAOC in Tamriel. If they make it like DAOC was before Mythic got greedy and started taking their customers for granted then maybe it could be a good game in its own right.

Since its an MMO, I hope the landmass is HUGE. I mean Daggerfall HUGE, or at least a staggering land scale not seen in RPG's for a while (closest was the Utrean Peninsula in multiplayer Dungeon Siege 1).

I have been hearing it is during the 2nd era, which means it puts it before Arena.
