THE Official Steam Deck Thread

It will end up being a more powerful version of the Aya Neo. You can see a review of that below. Which rocks a Ryzen 4500U with Radeon Vega 6

So if it ends up more powerful than that... I think where good. Especially at the price.

I think the storage issue is a real problem. What are you supposed to do with a 64gb model, when there's lots of games that take more space than that on their own? An SD card is not going to run Doom Eternal well.

Besides that, I absolutely love this idea. I've got 2 kids who really want to get into PC gaming, but I don't want to shell out the bucks to buy them real computers (or offer constant tech support), and this might be a perfect alternative.

This thing could also be interesting for those who basically just use their switch to play somewhat poor ports of indie games, the steam deck should be powerful enough to play those game the way they are meant to be ran.

Can't say I'm at all interested. :-/
same.

edit: And with Valve.. lets see if this thing is still working/available in 4-5 years. The Steam controller, Steam pcs etc. And console/phone people will just play on their phones... so this is for pc/steam gamers.

I see it works with monitor but anything about mouse and keyboard?

Also is it safe to assume no Origin, etc?

(Sorry if I missed those somewhere)

It has USB-C with DisplayPort 1.4. So should be ok there with some adapters. God that could make a sick looking desk setup. Just sit down, plop it into a dock and your ready to rock

If you install Windows then yes to Origin and other services. But if you stick with it's SteamOS Linux install... then I would assume no.

I like most things about this device, reserved the 512gb model. If this flops, I'm used to it. I bought an OUYA

Looks like it could be cool for light weight indie titles and older games that are not resource heavy and take up a lot of space. My son would actually really love this - he plays games like Terraria mostly.

Should also make for an emulation monster :D

The GPD devices have excelled for that kinda use case.

yeah honestly I see this as an HTPC / emulation power house. a fully mobile nvidia shield that is based on linux / can run windows

I'm wondering why people don't just use it as a PC. According to Digital Foundry, Valve is not stopping any of this.

Real Linux, or even real Windows if you want it for ~$400. Seems like a lot of horsepower for the money. LPDDR5 too!

I would say you at least would want the middle one. eMMC blows balls! So $529 plus tax. $649 seems a bit steep for the top end.

I guess people have emailed Gabe asking about the internal nvme drive and how it's hooked up. He respond it's just a 2230 m.2 slot

and the 64gb version has an m.2 slot as well.

specs page for it now confirms all models have a 2230 m.2 slot.

I went with 256gb model. Seems a good compromise between storage and price. Unlikely I'll rip it apart, but if it's easy, could see upgrading the NVME in the future. Fitting an NVME on the 64gb version may also require other work like soldering or flashing to make it work properly. That said, with the fastest SSD cards most indie games would probably run perfectly fine off those and I can reserve the NVME for AAA games.

This was a no-brainer money waster for me lol. I own an original nVidia Shield Portable (clamshell) and really loved it for a long time. Screen is tiny now, though, and I sort of moved away from streaming in-home due to latency. Steam Deck will be fun in bed and in the yard in summer. I already have a library of great indie games for it (which would be expensive to reproduce on Switch). All-in-all, my biggest disappointment is the Q1 2022 release date for me.

I want to get into the queue but this part of the world doesn't exist for this tech yet... And queues have reached all the way to Q2 2022 for the available regions. So expect rest of the world to see this +2023, if ever.

Yeah, one thing that has sort of been overlooked is that Retroarch has Linux support.

So, you can have your full Steam catalogue and any console video game that you can emulate.

And you can have all that while sitting on the shitter.
