the real deal behind the x-box controller

heh

Who cares anymore though? really...Practically everyone who has actually used the controller said it was quite nice and felt like it was never there after playing for a while.

I read that a lot of people didn't like or like that GAmecube controller a LOT more.
The xbox controller looks a little awkward to me....

Everything that i've heard about the xbox controller is that it feel like a brick with 2 weiners on each sides. The controller is way to big and blocky and it got very tiny buttons. Didnt have rumble built in.
Basicly it sux.

X=everyting but games

X=everyting but games

I want one for a web server, and another for a kitchen internet browser, another for a MP3 jukebox for my stereo, and a firewall, etc........

I also heard that it plays games, but I could care less about that.

Almost any controller owes a lot to Nintendo. They were first to have a digital pad, first to have shoulder buttons, first to have rumble feedback, first to have analog control, etc. Nintendo just keeps on innovating. I can't wait to see what game designers do with the gamecube's analog/digital-click shoulder buttons. I think that's cool

Right on cveale! X-Box + Linux = Dedicated Server

I mean, the thing should be powerful enough to run a dedicated server, and the hard drive should help out. I can't wait to see what the slashdotters do to the poor thing. A $300 CS server isn't a bad deal.

Xbox as a server? I dont know.. I would go with a ps2 since it already have linux and will have a 40GB HDD this fall. I dont know how someone could hack it but i bet anything is possible :D

For the price of a PS2 + the 40GB drive coming out later you might as well buy a cheap computer.

and to magicknight...I have no idea what problems you are having with your rumble pack because the batteries last a long time in them. 50 hours or so to be exact. And almost any product warns about using rechargeable batteries. 99.99% of the time there are no problems..just trying to cover their asses. I have had both the PS rumble controller and the N64 with the rumble pack. The PS is better, yes, but it better be. They simply copied Nintendo's idea and improved upon it. There isn't quite the huge difference you talk about though. Try using a good pair of new batteries instead of complaining about the cheap ones that come with it.

Also, there are companies that sell rumble packs that have 2x rumble built-in so you can have all the useless rumble you want

Actually the X-Box uses a highly stripped version of the Windows 2000 kernel. All that is included in it is the stuff that is needed for the X-Box hardware to work. It is very streamlined and is VERY stable because of the way it is set up. The whole kernel is only somewhere between 200-500k.

The PS2 is not a good choice , because the processor is not X86 compliant and it does not come with a hard drive like the X-Box. The X-Box is running an X86 Intel processor for crying out loud. It is basically a really cheap PC with a 733 Processor and hard drive. It will be hacked to run whatever the hell you want to run on it , and that includes Linux.

I wonder what portion of the Xbox consoles sold will just be for server purposes. Like Nintendo, Microsoft is selling their console at a small loss and hopes that strong software sales will make up for it. If a large amount of the Xbox's are sold soley for server purposes and not for games they could stand to lose quite a bit of money...very interesting thought

I've been following the developement of the three consoles for the past two years and all I can say is the XBOX is going to be amazing. It may use computer parts, but its architecture is nothing like a PC's. One bus connects everything @ a very high bandwidth. The info isn't rewritten @ any time and PC performance won't catch up for another 1.5-2 years after its release. Dolby Digital decoding and encoding, 125 mpps real time, voice communication, and braodband to boot. There are just too much reasons why the XBOX will be the best choice available come this fall.

WMTJ

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a fan boy its just that I haven't felt like purchasing a console since I bought my SEGS Genessis way back in the day.

A little snip from IGN and Team Ninja leader for DOA3

A little snip from IGN and Team Ninja leader for DOA3

IGNXbox: We totally agree with you on that point! The special effects are amazing in DOA3, and it's looking like your talking full advantage of the greater technical power of the Xbox. In terms of the technical aspects, what are the differences between DOA2 and DOA3, and how much of a difference is it using the Xbox?

TI: Speaking of polygons in both type of machines, there’s a huge difference. The demo version we showed is in Alpha 2 stage of development. And even at the early Alpha 2 stage, is uses three to four times more polygons than the final PS2 version. And it's not a simple benchmark that I'm talking about; I'm talking about actual in-game real-time graphics. Many people say that the number of polygons or having more polygon pushing power is not necessary or not important, but that's not the case. Several of the special effects and elements we're using [in DOA3] are only made possible with the additional polygons that are available when developing on the Xbox.

When developing on the PS2, when we try to increase the polygons, the images become rougher. To make the comparison on the Xbox... well, you know who Ryu Hayabusa is, right?

IGNXbox: Yes, of course. He's the male ninja in the game and Ninja Gaiden hero.

TI: You've seen the demo sequence in the forest when he appears, right? In that sequence, there are 5000 leaves swirling around.

IGNXbox: 5000 leaves!?!?

TI: Yes, it’s a nice special effect, no? Only with the power of Xbox, we can express and create such a scene.

DOA3 could be pulled off on ps2 but you would need to triple your dev team and twice you development time :)

As for DOA3 pushing more polygons than any ps2 games to date, I doubt it. Especially since VF4 on a naomi2 board looks as good if not MORE detailed than DOA3 (on characters at least) and is pushing around 10M polygons. 3 to 4 times more than ps2 ? Lol, thats PR bullshit right there.
