Vega Owners Thread

At £450, which is what I paid, I think the Sapphire Black 64 AC is a good purchase. Certainly wouldn't have paid £600 for it I'd have just paid another £100 and got a 1080ti. I got the Black edition as I don't think there will be any cooling differences between that and the LE. I don't have a window on my case so I can live without the LE and save £100. I'm disappointed the fans don't turn off on the desktop which surely wasn't a difficult thing for AMD to do and maybe they will add this feature with a future driver update.

I game at 1440p with a 30-144hz freesync monitor so this ticks all the boxes for me. Toyed with waiting for the AIB cards with better coolers on but I think they'll cost at least £550/£600 as I don't think the cooling solutions will be cheap. There wasn't a Fury X AC produced only the Pro so I think the AIB's will find it harder to make the card run faster, cooler and less noise on Air. The Vega 56 on the other hand could be another Fury Pro but this time around I wanted the top AMD card and not the cut down version.

I also think it's cool that I've only paid an extra £30.00 over what it cost me for the Fury Pro over 2 years ago and that's for the full Vega 64. What I paid is also 55% cheaper than a 1080ti for about 25/30% performance difference at 1440p. Not to shabby really. If you pay £600 that's only 16% cheaper so it makes the 1080ti a much more attractive alternative. Will be picking up tomorrow but won't be installing until the weekend so I'll post back with my initial thoughts and some benchmark comparisons with my Fury Pro.

Installed it today and all I can say it's a POS. Uninstalled drivers and installed new vega drivers and it won't play any game at all. The screen goes blank, can't find the monitor and that's it. Changed the cables uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled the drivers and the same result. Sometimes it just restarts. OK in desktop.

Lowered power to power save and put my 7700K in default mode and no change. Getting very disillusioned might just try to RMA it and buy a 1080ti. Keep getting notifications that my monitor supports freesync (it's enabled FFS) and **** like that. I'm a bit stunned AMD have released this card and drivers as they seem to be appalling. Are they saying I need to completely reinstall windows to make this work. They're having a laugh. If I can't sort by tomorrow it's gone and so are AMD from my system. The Fury card I put in my sons PC is cruising but this POS obviously not.

Disappointed doesn't even come close.

Check the BIOS switch on the GPU (top side towards front of PCB).
Also may want to try safe mode and DP ports. HDMI has given me fits in the past. BTW new drivers out.. one of known issues is related to HDMI loss.

Are you still using tje 700 watt power supply? Or did you get the 1000 watt one? If it is the 700 watt, it may be the culprit. Also are you using HDMI or Display Port?

Would love to know where you found one... in stock..? *sigh*

I live in the UK and I bought it at a local retailer who obviously had a small stock available at the special offer price. They don't have any stock in now and they're back up at £600.

If you live in the UK I'll sell it for the official MRSP.

Still using the 700w PSU and that was my first thought. It can black screen in 5 seconds so it can't have used up that much wattage and it doesn't shut down the pc it just takes the audio out and hangs there. I then have to manually shut down the PC. It did finish a 2 minute loop of one benchmark and it sometimes will load a game and then wham. I'm currently using a DP cable which I even swapped to no avail and I've tried a HDMI cable. All cables worked flawlessly with the Fury card.

I'm learning towards a driver issue and I'll have another go tonight to try and fix it. I'm also going to take the side off so I can see the activity lights on the card and see what happens when it lack screens again. Already spoke to the retailer who will give me a no quibble refund within 14 days so if I can't sort it by Saturday it's going back.

Tell us how it will be ...

Power supplies can cause symptoms that appear to be caused by other hardware and software. I have had weak power supplies that have tested out fine.. spent weeks trying everythi g else, finally changing out the power supply that tested good, and have it end up being the problem.

As for black screening 5 seconds in, that is actually a vwry common symptom of a weak power supply.

In the end, it may be something else, but best to be sure. Specially when the specs say 750 watt.

A new 750w PSU is inbound tomorrow and I'm also going to drop it off at my mate who owns the local computer shop and he's going to take a look. A lot of the reviews said a 600w would be fine and I'm also using power saver. I just played a quick game of UT3 and despite some input lag it ran fine. I also did a quick 5 minutes on an old wolfenstein game and that ran fine too. Tried to load tomb raider and boom crash and restart.

Something it's just started doing is loading a game and the video signal just goes although I can still hear the music and the game is still loading. It then gets to the menu screen but I can't do anything! Can't recover and have to restart. It did this with the Valley benchmark which I could hear was running but I couldn't see anything. The cable was working fine yesterday connected to my Fury card so at a bit of a loss on that one.

Hey ho welcome to the house of pain.

This is funny ...

So a 650watts power supply is not enough to feed Vega 56 ?

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/amd-radeon-rx-vega-56-8gb-review,8.html

  • AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 550 Watt power supply unit as minimum.
  • AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit as minimum.
What would happen if your PSU can't cope with the load:
  • bad 3D performance
  • crashing games
  • spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
  • freezing during gameplay
  • PSU overload can cause it to break down

Is its gold or bronze psu's?

Might make a diff. I stopped going cheap and always buy gold rated now.

Also try an undervolt at 1100mv. GN went even lower. You dont lose speed usually and power requirements drop like a rock. Either that or run balanced.

What brand and model are you currently using. Rumor has it but it's no been confirmed that these need 60amp on th 12v.

It's an old Termaltake Toughpower 700w that handled the Fury Pro well. I'm going to replace it with a 750w PSU and if that doesn't do it I'm done with Vega and AMD I'll just buy a nice Palit Jetstream 1080ti and it's sorted. Life's too short for getting this kind of **** sorted TBH.

One other thing to pay attention to (power supply design dependant) is the pci-e power rails on the power supply If both pci-e cables are coming off the same rail, you could be over taxing that rail. Learned about this when i went from my 7970's crossfired to the 390x's crossfired.
