video card question

can't change platform right now, so on my fx8350 system would it be a stupid thing to do going from an 8Gb 390X to an RX 580?
most resources on the net qualify this a side-grade, to put it mildly.
opinions, experiences?

It is a side grade, or slight down grade to go from 390x to the 580, as the 390x pulls ahead in most games by a few fps, or at least that was the case a year ago. I know the 390x runs very hot and is power hungry, and i am not sure about the 580 as i didn't really care about those areas when i looked into it. So if the 580 is coolerr and draws less power, and that is important to you, then that would be the only good reason to switch

yeah, power consumption and heat would probably be the only reason to switch cards as the 580 is more efficient in both respects, but since I'm not worried about those issues I'll hold it off for the time being.
 
I'll have to mostly agree with the others.
I went from dead 290x to rx 580. 3dMark results are consistently about 10% higher with a significant drop in temp and power use.
 
how much cooler does the 580x run? Armored Warfare CONstantly shutsdown my rig, with a 390x stryx. warthunder and Star Trek Online I can play for hours, rather than minutes. it's also quite warm in my place

185 watts vs. 275. Performance is even so you'd be better off with a core system upgrade.
 
well screw it, giving my system a last upgrade since I can't go full.

will probably go for a GTX 1080 and return to green after 20 faithful years with AMD.

the card kills the 390X by the numbers, draws less power and will give my 8350 something to do. Not worried about CPU bottleneck.

expecting nice improvements in Prepar3d, X-Plane 11 and everything OpenGL related.
 
sort of in the same position as Lurk, here. got an 8350 as well, and there aren't many recent procs, if any, that'll pop into a crosshairV and not sure there's really a need to replace them

Somewhere between 50c and 60c with around 50% fanspeed. Compared to the 290x it's an icecube. My vidcard is in the sys specs button.

There is another reason why you want the 580...Is the last gen and i see still performance added in new drivers.For 390 not so much anymore even if it's not discontinued.I feel the 480 / 580 had a long life.You will get something very mature.

I have the old Fx mainboard around and don't what to do with it.
 
I always plan around GPU upgrades what my next system is likely to be. So yes, your current system will maybe bottleneck the RX580.. but will the next system?

I was in the same boat but jumped to the RX Vega64 Liquid and it helped overall but my system still bottlenecks it.
 
been kinda thinking on replacing the cpu, but then that would mean a new mobo and reinstalling 10 and everything else and it's always a pain in the ass
 
so I got his thing installed. one thing so far. fans not spinning when on manual and just surfing. this normal, or is it borked outta the box?


edit: working as intended. no AW battles shutdown my rig

Ya my RX 480 GTR fans are off most of the time... makes for an uber quiet rig...

there's an idea :D can't edit sig, tho, nor quote or much of anything else. all that works is the quick reply. this started after the boards came back up recently
