Where did everyone go?

On a whim I decided to try folding on my GPU again. I haven't been folding with my CPU since it caused some instability and the last time I tried it on my GPU I was getting way lower points than I should have been so I gave up.

Now with a single 7970 in a 5 year old computer I'm getting around 95-100K a day which would put me at 5th place for daily production on the team. That doesn't seem right.

Is everyone too busy trying to mine doge coin or something? :p

I think its a combination here.

First, the value of CPU folding has decreased to the point where those who don't have the equipment or the desire to GPU fold are leaving the ranks. Count me in that category, as I'm still sporting an aged launch 5870. BigAdv extended the life of CPU folding, but PG is again raising the bar on that front to where only 4p boxes need apply. This side of the equation is impacting all teams, in terms of overall user numbers, though the GPU boon seems to be keeping production numbers up.

Second, our lack of leadership here is having a similarly large (or perhaps greater) impact. I "ran the show" for a few years before becoming an admin here and, when I had to refocus on site-wide tasks, we were never able to get a new DC leadership team going. Granted, I'd also argue that my efforts paled in comparison to previous leadership. Still, an organized effort should always trump an ad hoc approach. I'd be happy to support a group effort in anyway I can, if that's the desire of the community, but reversing the current trends will require some organization and leadership.

My numbers have been up and down lately, I've actually been using my comp for gaming. :p

I've continued to fold even though the convo dropped off. I still enjoy watching my numbers go up, and given i have family members affected by some of the things F@H research's it's my way of doing something/anything.

Add me to the group that's noticed some instability though. I've not really taken the time to track it down to being folding or something else. But I'm not a huge fan of the newer client thats for sure.

I've also noticed some major lag in general on my systems, although I'm 99% sure it's because i enabled bigadv. Before enabling that i never had issues, and now even the windows interface will lag until i pause folding. Hell i use to play certain games while folding. This is across multiple machines too, not limited to just 1.

Anyways my home machines and a few work machines are still folding for me, and will continue to. I've been with this group for a very long time and have no plans on leaving even if other teams are beating the crap out of us!!

I stopped around the time I overclocked my new(er) desktop. With school I didn't have the time to get it 24/7 folding stable, so I've been leaving my computer off. Getting engaged didn't really help with the spare time either, lol. I'm back at stock speeds though (BIOS update) so I'm going to try out folding again. Space-heater, activate!

Well I quickly found that I couldn't fold and use my computer much without issues, so for a couple weeks I was only folding at night while I slept or during light useage.

Then I got a BSOD about a week ago and said the hell with this.

Yeah, Folding certainly can find system weaknesses. Actually one of the benefits, as far as I'm concerned.

Which is why I still use Folding for the burn-in process. No GPU's in most of the machines here, so I'm limited to about 10K-12K per computer, which is easily trumped by GPU's.

:yep:

Which is how how??? and burn_in utilized it as well. Useful tool, with fringe benefits.

I still fold, though I got my mad thrillz from folding oldskool gromacs WUs on the v5 client /w ancient boxes. Stanford killed that core off last August which forced some of my boxes into retirement (the ones that do not support SSE2). I'm CPU folding only, mostly lower end hardware, though I do have a pretty beefy nettop atom box folding some mad triple digit PPD for me

We're not all gone, like others i'm only folding with lower end CPU's so far i can keep going even if the point given to them are lower
