Which shooter should I play

Och

ATI Champion
Looking to maybe play either something old or new, single player. Something with an interesting story, but not too much grinding. Or no story, but good gameplay. I have a huge backlog of games that I didn't play, so let me list what I enjoyed and what I didn't.

Enjoyed:
Bioshock 1 & 2
Rage 1 & 2
All Dooms, but Doom Eternal was a bit annoying with all the jumping
Titanfall 2
Crysis 1-3, but they all got annoying, too long for their own good.

Did not enjoy:
Bioshock 3 - the amount of grinding is annoying
Mad Max - same
Deus EX - too much dialog, too RPG

I also enjoyed all the GTA games I played, and Mafia 1-2. Did not care for Mafia 3 - clumsy control and boring setting.

Looking for whatever recommendations, I have tons of games in my library, don't even know where to start.

Maybe try Singularity or Time Shift?

Those were two more or less straight shooters that I enjoyed. I haven't actually played that many other straight shooters over the years, and it seems like mody of the ones I have you have already played.

If you like the GTAs you could consider the Saints Row games, but those are not really straight FPS. Saints Row 2 is a bit dated looking at this point, but I'd put the story a step above Saints Row 3 which was just totally over the top (that's the nature of the series, but I thought the balance was a little bit better in 2). Along those same lines there's also Sleeping Dogs.

System shock 2. Old, but still an amazing game. I'm playing Control right now. It's pretty trippy. The game mechanics are pretty unique.

Call of Duty Cold War. Can probably snatch a key from Hardforum for $20 or less.
Doom 3 BFG edition.
Doom 64.
Mafia Remastered.
Cyberpunk 2077 (do only main story). However, not much of a shooter but you can put it on hard and have some fun. Some set pieces are good.
Ghost runner. It is a platforming slicer.
Quake 2 RTX.

Those are my latest picks.

Prey - both the 2017 and 2006 games. One is a shooter, one is more like bioshock
Metro 2033, Last Light (best), Exodus - 2033 is a bit of a slog but it's worth it for the sequel.
Sniper Elite 4 - only if you don't mind sniping, but it's the best in the series

Some of the Far Cry games are good, but people tend to like different ones. Imo FC3, FC3 BD, FC Primal are probably the best.

Dying Light is probably more melee than shooter, but it's a neat game that might be different from your typical.

Another vote for Metro Exodus. Just finished it. The best part is it always shows a pointer to your next objective. I'm not a big time gamer like some in this thread *cough* but I did finish it in 30hrs.
Far Cry New Dawn isn't all that long but it has "let's go shoot something" replay-ability when you're done. I've wasted 154 hours on it, mostly just running and killing and blowing things up. YES!!!
And agreeing with Nucrackr, Primal is way better than you might expect.

Some suggestions off the top of my head:

Metro 2033/Last Light/Exodus
Control
Death Stranding
Sniper Elite series (including Zombie Army games)
Metal Gear Solid V
Alien Isolation
Far Cry 3
The Evil Within 1 and 2
Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes
Rise of the Tomb Raider
The Division 2
Dead Space 1 and 2
Alan Wake
Sleeping Dogs
Wolfenstein the New Order

Also will recommend Elderborn. Its not a shooter but a first person melee game and was really surprisingly excellent.

+1 for Sleeping Dogs. Had a lot of fun with that game.

Good show, everyone.

I was going to recommend it. But I've tried to play BL2 multiple times and every time I eventually hit a different section that just crashes and prevents me from playing further. I can't bring myself to play again and it put me off trying BL3 or the pre sequel. Did enjoy it till that would happen though.

I think I'm gonna do Borderlands, never played any game in the series.

It may sound dumb, but ignore the older games and just start with borderlands 3. 2 is by far the best story and characters, but three really makes the gameplay stand out and is more fun. Plus 3 is more of where its all headed, and a bunch of people didnt like 3 when tthey were big fans of 2. So i suggest skipping all of that and just playing 3 without experiencing the previous titles.

If however, you just want to play through the story and are not really looking for a gameplay fix, or planing to play the game longer than the campaign. Only play number 2 in this case.
