Windows 10 Insider Preview update question

Back before the full release, I'd updated most of our home computers to Windows 10 via the Insider Preview program. Two of the computers, primarily used by the LupKids, only made it to Build 10565 before they stopped being used. I brought the systems out a few weeks ago and, unlike the other systems I was running on the program, was dismayed to see that neither will update past 10565 anymore.

Have I missed my window for updating through the Insider Preview program, or some other non-nuke method? Sure, I can reinstall Windows 7 and update from there, but that's more than a bit of a hassle and time thief.

It should still work.

Did you check the update ring you are in? I noticed mine went from fast ring to slow ring after an update. Just double check everything and see what's up :)

What happens? Do the updates show up to download or fail to install?

Perhaps something related to what is found here:

Boxes show "up to date", and don't show anything further when I force a check. I'll check out the thread - thanks!

edit: downloading 1511 via that link. Will see if it works and activates.

Both were, and are, on fast ring. I'll shift them to slow ring, and see if that bumps something.

So both systems finally updated, without intervention. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way both lost activation (maybe because they weren't signing into the Insider Preview servers for X amount of time?). Unless there is a work-around (the Insider Preview key I got no longer works), I'll probably call up MS to see if there is a way to do this without reinstalling Windows 7 on the boxes.

Once they are upgraded and activated via a Win 7/8 key they should stay activated unless you swapped a bunch of parts. Downloading and re-installing the latest preview build should re-activate them. If you just have an insider preview key then yes, they are not permanent without a legit win 7/8 key that it was upgraded from. You can use your Win7/8 keys to activate Win 10 builds now.

Okay, good to know - I'll go through the activation process and enter the Win7 keys. They weren't originally upgraded / activated with their Win7 keys - they were clean installs, activated using the Insider program keys.

IIRC it's tied to the mobo and CPU. Ive swapped out my video card and both my hard drives and never had a problem with activation.

With that being said, if you reinstall Win7 AFTER you swap the hardware you are still entitled to use your retail key and then run the upgrade.

I was able to use my Win7 licenses to activate the boxes. Ran into another separate issues (blue screen's related to Norton), but that's a story for another thread.

Glad to see it's fixed :)

The latest build is quite nice. Still trying to wrap my head around the apps being always displayed in Start though. :(
