11.10 WHQL

That's not actually true. There was a simple fix, no reinstall of OS necessary.
A driver cleaner messing with os system files, me no like so much.
In addition I'm quite sure I tried the fix and didn't work! I also *think* it was stated there was a 50/50 chance. Enough for me to keep it as a very very very last resort from now on.

I had the issue you referred to, the SP1 install failuer was due to not properly cleaning out files from the driver store and resealing it (which, to be fair, only MS can do). The fix was simply those files to put back in the store using the restore function, it worked fine for me on 4 PC's.

Actually, you can do it yourself with sysprep. The program will clear out the entire driver store and reseal the system. Its on the pro CD. im sure you can find it online somewhere.

I use it periodically instead of a fresh install when i have issues or if im upgrading my hardware.

Ok, then I probably don't remember correctly and didn't try the fix at the time, can't recall the reason. All I can say is I've been a tad pissed at DriverSweeper ever since!
Anyway, thanks to both for clearing it up.
