Sports cars are having a moment—witness the revived Toyota Supra and the splashy mid-engined Corvette that both debuted last year—so it's perfect timing for Nissan to redesign its aging Z coupe, which we expect will bear the name 400Z. Nissan has been secretive with details about the 400Z, but we expect to see shared powertrain and platform with the Q60 coupe from Nissan's luxury division, Infiniti. That would mean a twin-turbo V-6 engine, rear-wheel drive proportions, and—mercifully—a much needed technology update.

We expect a price hike over the current 370Z to somewhere in the mid-$40,000 range for a starting price. To justify its higher price tag, we expect that the 400Z up the ante with more luxury features, improved performance, and more desirable styling, all of which will also help it move up from the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Subaru BRZ playing field to compete with the likes of the Supra, the BMW Z4, and the Audi TT.

Like its beastly brother, the Nissan GT-R, the 400Z is expected to be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6. But, instead of the fire-breathing 565-hp 3.8-liter that’s under the hood of the GT-R, the 400Z will likely get the 300-hp 3.0-liter mill from the Infiniti Q60. It's also possible that high-performance NISMO variant could get the 400-hp version of that engine that's currently exclusive to the Q60 Red Sport 400. While all-wheel drive is available in the Infiniti, we expect Nissan will stick with rear-wheel drive exclusively for the 400Z; a second-speed automatic is likely, but we're hoping for a six-speed manual option as well.

Odd comparing the Z series against the Supra? Are they not in completely different price brackets?

Hopefully they lighten it up a bit while they're at it. I love the Fairlady badge on the rear of it. Brings back memories.

The only form of this car that will be appealing will be the NISMO, imo. I can't see a $40k-plus couple running the Q60 ~300-320hp motor doing very well at that price range.

I also have no idea why they would compare it to the Supra. It's more in-line as a RWD competitor to the STI, BRZ, Toyota 86, and the Civic Type-R.

First glimpse of the new Nissan Z...

This has been a long time coming since the 370z is getting long in the tooth and is very outdated (to be expected from a car that was released in 2009). I loved my 2007 350z so have been looking forward to an update/announcement

Huge fan of the Z. I wanted one, but ended up with a g35 manual with the same VQ engine. I really hope they do it justice, as it's one of my all time favorites going back to the fairlady days.

The 2022 Nissan 400Z will go on sale in America in the spring of 2021.

As for technical specifications, the Proto is just that—a prototype—and, as mentioned, Nissan isn't saying much about what it means for the production 400Z. It does confirm the Proto packs a twin-turbo V-6, and if the road car's engine is what we think it is and the 400Z badge does become reality, that will change the Nissan Z tradition of indicating engine displacement in the model name. The engine in question is likely the 3.0-liter VR30DDTT as used in the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400, which makes—you guessed it—400 horsepower, so "400Z" would refer to the vehicle's horsepower instead. A focus on the engine's force-fed nature is found in the rather large "Boost" gauge displayed on the digital cluster. We weren't able to peek under the hood to confirm our powerplant suspicions, but we can say the Z will continue to be available with a six-speed manual, as seen in the Proto. An automatic option is currently being developed for those who may not want to—or are not able to—row their own.

Oof, that front end is awful. What happened to the original front design. :(

That square opening is not a good look. Interior is OK.

Side profile and rear are fantastic.

don't like the design, interior looks good tho. Really wish we'd get cars like the 240z again, but that won't happen as we all well know.
