Apple thread

The Pixel 4 is supposed to have Face ID-like functionality. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I did the Face ID setup at my desk without a hat or glasses

I was surprised as hell it opened every time today riding my bike with Helmet and riding sun glasses on

I had much more problems with the fingerprint ID on my note 8 and mechanic's hands
grease, dirt and cuts

Yeah FaceID is pretty smooth. Just a touch faster this iteration around but its due to iOS 13 and not new hardware.

Triple camera is nice, night mode is nicer. Touch better quality on the telephoto and normal lens is nice too.

Ultrawide is good but in well lit areas. It suffers when its darker and night mode doesnt work with that lens.

Same stuff with the processor, faster than the competition by a mile. Same stuff with the RAM, lacking compared to the competition(iPhone will probably lose all 'speed' tests where opening apps and keeping them in memory matters). But will trounce on anything doing any real work like encoding or filtering videos/photos.

Overall this is the iPhone X(SS) a second iterative iPhone. This should have been a new design but I guess next year will have to be the year. I really wish they would go back to the iPhone 5 look which the new iPad pros are modeled after. Those were my favorite looking iPhones by far.

No 5G is a real downer.

5G is so limited in the US right now, it's not a factor for buying a phone except for very specific markets. I'm betting that the iPhone 12 will have 5G support next year, giving the carriers more time to make it more widely available.

With speeds here at 100mbs+ I dont see the need for anything faster? Maybe if your home landline sucks but thats about it. I personally wouldnt need massive speeds on my cell phone.

I do.
We tether to the kids tablets and other devices a TON when we travel or simply go for a drive across town.

In some parts of the home (~4000 sq ft property), we have slow spots that I was previously planning on filling via mesh networking.
However, when you have 5G in the house and ~ 700mbps speeds, you dont need it.

Having 5G and unlimited tethering on a Note10 / S10 is miles better than not.

You dont need 100mbs for kids tablets. They aint torrenting

You only need it because I guess you refuse to fix your house network issue?

50 bucks more to get Kenwood & apple's dumb speed sensor wire hooked up to the truck's VSS

it's only used for wireless Carplay

but wireless Carplay is working
it has a little more delay in changing tracks
but phone calls work well

Say that when you have 15 devices and half of which are streaming 4k content at any time.

We have gb service in the house, but it's not always enough. Like I said, 5g phones fill in all of the hard to reach spots quite nicely.

So much so, that I haven't needed to worry about setting up a mesh solution.

Secondly, 5g isn't just about raw speed. It's also about breadth of the network in ways that 4g simply can't match.

Gigabit internet not good enough for 8 devices running 4K? Better check your connections. That’s if you got 2 Netflix accounts(4 max simultaneously on one account). Netflix recommends 25mbs for 4K. Even if you doubled that and had 8 devices running 4K you still wouldn’t come close to tapping out gigabit.

The space race for faster wireless service isn’t needed on phones unless it’s your primary source of internet. New technology usually rolls out in big cities where if isn’t needed as much. They should roll it out in rural areas first.

Yeah, I read that it could handle changes in appearance such as the ones that you described. Beards too, if I recall correctly. Can Face ID unlock your phone while you are seated at a desk, or do you have to pick it up and look straight at it?

I never thought of someone having such problems with fingerprint readers. That is very interesting to know. But I am a guy who does not work with greasy or dirty things and washes his hands perhaps a little too often. :bleh:

I like the capacitive fingerprint reader on my Nokia 7.1. It is very accurate, and the rear placement makes it easy to unlock one-handedly after I pull it out of my pocket. Having to pick it up to unlock it when it is placed upon a flat surface can be a bit of a pain, though.

when I did my roof last year the shingles removed the tips of my gloves and my fingerprints

Face ID seems to have a cone area it can open not just straight at it

As usual, the UAE and most of western Europe is way ahead of the US in terms of internet/mobile access and speed. :(

In all fairness the UAE is only 32,000 square miles, which is half the size of Florida

You could put almost all of Western Europe inside of California, Texas, and Colorado

I think Canada's worse...….

Our Telecom triopoly will find every which way possible to nickel and dime us to death if we want faster internet and/or no data restrictions.....
