Dawn Sleeps With ATI - Radeon R3x0 Dawn OpenGL Wrapper

OMG. I just revisited this again after finally getting an X800 and it's amazing now how cinematic the Dawn demo runs. It looks like a little short from Pixar, eerily life-like. Thanks again to parties responsible for the amazing work on the wrapper and the wrapper-wrapper as well. Thanks for clearing up how to use it madshi because I would definitely have been going around in circles otherwise.

Very nice! With the old method (with opengl from cat3.5) I got 30 fps in 1152x864 watching Fairy in ultra mode. Now, same setting, 40 fps using cat 4.9.

Hi Ratchet,

could you somehow make it clear that X800 users must not use the old atioglxx.dll? When they use it Dawn will not run - even when using my new "wrapper wrapper".

Perhaps you should remove the whole atioglxx.dll part from the description? It's not needed anymore (with any card).
Indeed!
Because I fell for that one with my X800XT PE card, majorly
It is not upon this day (night) that I read this thread to have a proper study & search why on earth it didn't work despite your fantastic wrapper!

And I was too lazy to also give the wrapper an argument to load the ultra data set.
Setting the option "True" in the args.txt at //Are we ultra data set? will crash Dawn without mercy.

Didn't know there were additional patches to spice up Dawn's nudeness.
Heck I'll search for that as well since I am at it and got her to work on my new videocard, which I have for about 3 weeks now!

Damn she runs smooth and beautiful!
Amazing!
My previous card was a 9800 SE (thus not even a pro "based" card).
It didn't ran bad, but on this card it really is one heck of an experience!
What a framerate!

...Too bad the FSAA only seems to run with the normal data set and not on the ultra data set.
Setting the multisample value in the .txt to "1" (or to "4" as suggested somewhere in this topic) doesn't work! :(

And to Madshi... well done mate!
Do you have information (or are you busy with it your self) concerning the Dusk demo?
I wonder what the technical difficulties are with Dawn's sister when it comes to porting/wrapping her to shine on our ATi cards?

Not Working

Not Working

The OpenGl wrapper is not working, and I've tried with and without the atioglxx file. My videocard is a 9600xt 256mb and I have the latest drivers. Can somebody please help me?

I'd also like to thank madshi for his "wrapper wrapper" and the ability to now run this with the latest drivers (4.12) on my Radeon 9800 Pro 128. I'd never found the proper older opengl driver before and had never seen this demo. Truly amazing!

She's even more amazing without the wings and the clothes.

What files have you added to the Dawn folder and which exe did you start with what parameters (if any)?

What happens if you try to start ultra? Do you get crashes or does it simply look like normal? You need to start StartDawn.exe with the parameter "args_ultra.txt".

OK, i have that {dawn nvidia corporation}in the bin folder named fairy. i have the dawn hook starter named fairy args_ultra.txt

what should i name everything?

(Got it fixed-- answer edited at bottom)

Ok, I'm clueless. On my system with an X800 Pro and Cat 4.12, I can't get it to work. I just installed Dawn and the Madshi files from the article. Do I need the old wrapper too? The Madshi files are in the \bin directory of the Dawn folder.

I've tried startdawn, startdawn args.txt, startdawn args_ultra.txt, and I always get the error that it requires Nvidia hardware.

I know I'm just missing something stupid, can anyone help?

NEVERMIND-- I hadn't put the opengll.dll wrapper in. Should maybe that page be reorganized to have all of the downloads TOGETHER? It's very easy to miss one of the sets of files you need to get to make it all work. There are so many updates on that page that it's impossible to figure out what is what if you never saw it before... :)

i realise this thread has been dead a while, but i searched everywhere else and this seems to be the best place.

anyone got dusk working on an ati card?

guys I decided to reinstall dawn, since I got my new x800xl. I copied the wrapper in the bin folder (startdawn, hookdawn) and also got the opengl wrapper atioglxx.dll.

I have the cat 5.6 drivers, and I cant seem to get dawn to run anymore. I keep getting a "dawn has encountered a problem" error and It seems as if the atioglxx.dll opengl file is doing it, because when I take it out and try to run dawn, the thing will load and then crash since the opengl instructions are wrong...

So is there a fix for the atioglxx.dll file? or is it just because of the new cat 5.6 drivers and cant do anything about it?

You need two wrappers: The original one (opengl32.dll) and mine (startdawn+hookdawn). Do *NOT* put the old atioglxx.dll into the dawn folder !!

Sorry guys for the bump.

Ive downloaded the startdawn+hookdawn and proper opengl32.dll and am only able to get the non-ultra working.

Im not understanding this from its decription on the use of the Ultra...

" you have to tell StartDawn which (via parameter). If you want to use Ultra Mode you have to pass extra arguments to StartDawn on the command-line or by editing the start command within the shortcut properties.
Example:
StartDawn args_ultra.txt starts Dawn in Ultra Mode.
StartDawn <filename>.exe args_ultra.txt starts Dawn in Ultra Mode using one of the alternate filenames."

Can anyone explain me this in lamens terms so that I can get the Ultra running?

Also, I remember running dawn without the Nvidia logo. Does anyone remember on how to remove it?

Right click the Dawn shortcut (e.g. the item in the start menu) and click on "properties". In the "destination" edit field append " args_ultra.txt".

I right-clicked the shortcut but was only to find 3 tabs......general, shortcut and compatibility. None of these has the "destination" field. Are you referring to the "target" field? Sorry for being a pain in the ass, but I really would like to see dawn again on my new card and setup.
