DooM Eternal

This is one of the only shooters where I also had to drop difficulty. Think I was +1 normal difficulty as +2 was painful towards the end.

Yeah, I dropped down to HMP. The thing is HMP is actually too easy, but I don't like the game enough to "challenge myself" with UV, which just leads to frustration.

Visually the game is amazing. Well, at least after the first few boring levels. Some crazy stuff with the fleshy growths/tentacles. That's what hell should have been in Doom (2016), rather than the boring brown stone they went with.

Game play still seems meh to me, and a clear step down from 2016, but on HMP it's easy enough that I'll eventually wade through it.

The platforming outside of combat is the worst thing though. It just takes me out of the game a lot of the time. And they actually have flaming pinwheels?! Next time id, please don't hire ex-Mario devs for a Doom game!

The included lore in the game is also pretty much garbage. I feel bad that someone actually had to come up with that crap (not blaming the writer, I think they were given an impossible task to explain the utter nonsense mashed together in the game).

Speaking of the lore, does the game ever explain/show how you got from the end of doom 2016 to the beginning of doom eternal?

KAC's big dick wasnt enough for Doom Eternal.
The shrinkage is real.

Kinda glad I held off on this now that I finally got a new card and that Neo G9 is coming. Watching Linus play looked very impressive.

Your EDITED is a nub :bleh: I liked the previous doom, finished that one. This one is too much of a hack and slash type game, i have no interest in that

It’s fine. If 30 minutes is all you gave it then your opinion is invalid anyways. It’s like me and Dark Souls. Even though I actually played that game for 4 hours before I called it.

yeah fair enough. Was playing late last night after i played ghost of tsushima, will probably give it a bit more of a go at a later stage

It takes a while to grow on you unlike Doom 2016.

This ^

Hated it at first but after beating both I think Eternal is the better game. Yeh it's very gamey but I kind of liked the Mario esqe arcadey-ness by the end of it. It doesn't take it self too seriously, this is not a Doom 3 sequel. It's just a fun arcade shooter.

So, I finally finished this game. It took me almost 17 months. I kept thinking the game was almost over, and then there were another five levels. :bleh:

Overall, I give it no more than a 5/10. I was as far down as a 4/10, but the last boss ended up being kind of epic (after initially being annoying). Maybe at times I got as high as a 6/10. My experience in the game felt weirdly inconsistent. At times it was enjoyable, so I didn't hate every minute I was playing, but there were too many clunky aspects that took me out of that enjoyment and kept pushing me away. It was also too long, probably padded out by the platforming, and had a couple pretty boring levels.

I feel like pretty much every change they made compared to Doom (2016) was a step in the wrong direction. The platforming sucked. Too little ammo even after fully upgrading was obnoxious. I can see how the changes may have made the game have more depth and require more "skill", but in this kind of game I just want to get in their blasting with whatever weapon I want. I don't want to constantly run around looking for ammo. It just ruined the enjoyment for me.

As mentioned in my quoted post, the lore was utterly ridiculous and I stopped even bothering to read it about 1/4 way through. It made so little sense that they'd have been better off just leaving it out in my opinion.

On the plus side the visuals were awesome. The boss battles felt pretty epic. And sometimes the combat was still fun like Doom (2016). But on the whole I didn't like the game and don't recommend it.

If they come up with another Doom I probably won't be buying it unless the word is it's gone back to be a lot closer to Doom (2016), which I enjoyed. Hell, I even enjoyed Doom VFR. This just didn't have the same magic.

If it was explained I certainly didn't read it anywhere. Apparently we were some sort of intergalactic hero of some sort, seemingly having been alive for a long time, or maybe reincarnated? I wouldn't be surprised if the writers just threw their hands up at some point and were like, "whatever, there's some words in there, maybe someone can figure out if it means anything!".

Either that or maybe it was an early attempt at using an AI to write the story.

I feel like you have to pound through the game pretty quickly to really enjoy it. Playing it in bits and pieces over a long time isn't really going to be enjoyable. Alot of the fun of the game is about mastery, and you're just not going to gain that mastery if you take long breaks between play sessions.

Yeah, alot of the changes they made from 2016 were controversial. They really want you to play their way, and punish you for playing otherwise. Another reason it's better to play straight through, so you can develop the muscle memory "their way". I especially hated the marauders, as the worst example of not just nudging you toward "their way", but actually forcing you. Otherwise, I really did enjoy alot of the gameplay decisions they made. I even liked the platforming (which everyone else seems to hate).

The new Doom games have a funny relationship with lore. Like it's there, and it's pretty deep if you really want to nerd out on it, but at the same time they don't take it very seriously, and really push it to the background so most players don't have to be bothered by it.

Agreed. My first playthrough was in bits a pieces and it was a slog. Second playthrough over a couple sessions was much better, I had a really good time with it.
