GameCube DVD player

It could work on the DVD version, because it would know how to read a regular DVD. Dreamcast uses a different file format, but it can read regular CDs, so people were able to trick it.

I'm sure that you'll be able to buy pirated games for the regular GameCube, but it will probably be possible to download games for the DVD version.

Yeah but it'll be awhile before dvd burners and recordable dvd's are inexpensive enough to make pirating viable

I heard a while ago that DVD burners will be $500 by the end of the year, and disks will be $5. Eventually, the disks will be as cheap as CD-Rs are now. I'm getting one when the drives cost $300. I can't wait. 700MB doesn't cut it for me nowadays.

Ugh! I'm gonna have to disconnect my phone when DVDR's are cheap as I have over 200 DVD movies and I don't want to spend the rest of my life making DVD's for people! :(

No, because it's not actually a DVD that the GameCube uses. It uses a different file format. It would be a lot more difficult to mod the GameCube so it will read the standard DVD format.

With the one that plays regular DVDs, it would probably be a lot easier to trick the system into playing a copied game. Still not easy, but possible. I think there's a good chance that somebody will figure out a way to read the proprietary format (like they did with Dreamcast), copy it, and come up with a way to trick the sytem into playing the copied one.

Yes, I agree that the DVD player GameCube will be the weak link of the Nintendo family. What could be done is use a startup disc to boot the GameCubeDVD, then use an ethernet cable and the broadband adapter to transfer the data over to a computer. It'd basically be used as a giant reader. Then you'd have a nice image on your computer to do whatever with. I'm just guessing if this will work, but it's actually similar to how games are copied on the Dreamcast.

Haha..

#1 The cav drive in gamecube (same with panasonic dvd) will only start a game if it detects the EXACT same weight as the 8cm optical discs from matsushita, which is not the same as your normal 8cm disc. If you put a full blown dvd or 8cm one, it will detect an anomaly in the weight of it and will then either start the dvd movie (not a game) or just dont start at all
#2 do you have the guts to hack the 256bit encryption (and higher in the futur) for matsushita's optical disc? Even the best hacker on earth with millions to spend into research and equipment to break the encryption would take years.
#3 problem with dreamcast is that it could read its games in CD format along with sega's proprietary format, on gamecube its either GOD (gamecube optical disc) or nothing, you cant just suck the data from the original disc and copy it on a CD and make it pass as sega's proprietary disc. It was a serous loophole in dreamcast, but on gamecube, it wont be that easy..
#4 Nintendo will upgrade their drive and chips at every few quarters included in games, just like ps2 is doing. New games will upload the new drivers when you start them up, which will make any new modchips or hacks useless.

I'll take those DVDs off your hands.

Buggy Loop, good points, but it still stands a decent chance of being cracked on the Matsushita version, if you ask me. Never underestimate the persistance of hackers. This is why I'm waiting to see what happens before I lay down the cash for a Cube.

I don't think anyone would say that anything is hack-proof. The point is that it will be VERY hard to do and will most likely not be mainstream (which is all that matters). Don't hold your breath for pirated GameCube games...it may never happen

It's better for us all if GC games can't be pirated, we'll get more titles! develepors follow the profits.
