Info on HyperZ, you might want to know!! "hint"

Being an avid tweaker as soon as I got the Radeon it was benchmarking time so I could measure the difference. While sifting through the registry I found something very interesting. HyperZ is defaulted to off. It works more or less like the D3D FSAA. As default it works on Application Preference. Therefore not using the technology unless the program asks it to. Therefore changing it to on will force every program to use it. In 3dmark2000 just by turning this option to "on" it increased my 3dmarks by 700 marks. Now you tell me if that's an awesome performance gain.

I hope I shedded some light on the situation.

I can't remember at this time.......I worked along side Alex Wong of SmartAlec Corp. and he implemented it into his newest version of PC Accelerator 5001. For a small fee of $10, (well worth it as it tweaks many other things besides the video card), you can tweak your Radeon to the max. The only thing not implemented in the tweaks is the clkgen. But you can use Powerstrip by Entech for that. Please help Alex Wong of SmarAlec Corp. save his company by purchasing PC Accelerator 5001 at www.smartalec2000.com . I'm sure he would really appreciate it.....his products are top notch and without some help some he will be going out of business.....so please donate to a worthy cause. If he wasn't in this situation I would have to tell you, I would give you the reg fix to enable Hyper all the time, but for a measly $10, I'd say it's worth it.

I thought there was a setting in the control panel to turn this on off and that it was defaulted to on.. I've never checked it, but remember Anandtech's review talking about the difference with it on/off.. Also, anyone know if the HyperZ is the cause of the horrendous Z-buffer problems in MDK2?

Grimm

I noticed that too when I first got it but i don't know if it defaults to off. Have tou tryed any other benchmarks besides 3dmark2k? When I tested q3 after changing that setting I got a lower score...

Can anyone else confirm this? I will test some more when I get home...

Oh and Grimm, i have those z-buffering problems in MDK2 as well but I think that is the game not the drivers. UT used to do that as well and after a couple of the d3ddrv.dll updates the problem dissapeared... But since MDK2 runs in opengl its a bit weird. No other games I have played have the problem so I think its and MDK2 issue. Have their tech guys said anything?

Just look under ATI in the Regedit. You can find every thing you need. Save $10

Thanks yearout; already did that, but couldn't find anything on "HyperZ" there. Sorry Radelon, just trying to save a few bucks :)

There is a setting called "DisableHierarchicalZ" ... but when I change it I get now speedincrease in 3DMark2000 (its default setting is 1).

Oh and about MDK2, the Voodoo5 has the same problem, guess it's the game.

Do as you wish guys.....but there are many other registry tweaks that come with the program that will speed your video card up a ton. I'm just trying to help this guy out and save his company, I guess some people would rather not pay $10 then to help a programmer out.

Any nice improvements in Q3A framerates with HyperZ enabled? BTW, tomorrow I get my card! I just hope my little brother will be able to hear the doorbell (he plays the music in his room a bit too loud), or I will have to wait an extra day. Maybe if I bribe him to pay extra attention. :)

I don't see how HyperZ is disabled by default. Do the reviews on the net have HyperZ disabled or enabled?

2 questions,, First where are you guys getting the 3056 drivers? I havent been able to find them anywhere???? Secondly,, I found this registry key you mentioned, and change it from 1 to 0, nothing happens, no difference in 3dmark 2000 scores whatsoever...

Thanks,

Mike

Not that I am doubting Radelon, but has anyone else been able to verify the effects of messing with the reg? It sounds great to get a big bump, but I think at least one of the reviewers would have spotted that or ATI would have told someone since according to Radelon's addition 15 frame in Q3 would put it ahead of the Detonator 3 drivers. I am kinda leary about this since it is too similar to the big deal on 3dfx's tech board. While the reg patch there fix a problem and increased the speed, it only occurred on small percentage of machine with previous V2 configurations.
