New vehicle

Thinking about indulging in a new vehicle. My Ford Edge 2009 is now almost 12 years old. There is nothing wrong with it except that it looks old.

Wife also keeps asking me to buy a new car. Says go buy a Porsche or something. I don’t really want to buy a brand new vehicle due to depreciation and how every year now models change and cars are getting destroyed in value much faster.

So, what’s a good vehicle to buy second hand. I am more a CUV/SUV guy but am ok to consider a 2 door coupe or a 4 door sedan if it is reasonably priced. I watch car reviews daily and there is just too much choice to make a decision on brand and model.

Say budget is about 50-60 Gs. I am still not comfortable in spending money because I literally am working towards saving at least a million dirhams cash and equities so I am not caught with my pants down if I lose my job or some crap. (Still at about 70% of that target). However, a new car seems to be a real need :bleh:.

I would like to stay away from brands that have very poor resale value. Think all American brands not in Ford group, Audi, all Korean brands, Nissan/Infiniti and Chinese brands.

This really narrows it down to Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Ford, Land Rover etc.

Recos?

Porsche Cayennes look great to me. I saw a Cayenne S yesterday that was just awesome looking. I'm not sure what they go for in your area though.

Mustang Mach-E. I don't expect it will depreciate like other new cars.

I read that the Tesla Model 3 only depreciated 10% after 3 years.

Also emissions testing wont be an issue if you decide to move to Cali.

Whatever you get, CPO is the way to go.... IF you can find inventory.

I will throw this for consideration:

Most vehicles lose value but Toyota/Lexus lose less and are super reliable.

Not looking for electric vehicles.
Toyota / Lexus is out of the question.

if you're really looking for a car in that segment from the brands you named, then you should consider something like the

Mercedes G-Class
Porsche Cayenne
BMW SUVs as Acroig mentioned
Ford (no idea who would want one of these)
Land Rover Discovery/Defender is a no brainer but not cheap to buy - nor cheap to fix, also for what exactly would you NEED something like a Range Rover?

I really like the BMW X3 M40i - introduced in 2018.
It has an amazing powertrain.

You might be able to find a 2019 BMW X5 xDrive50i in your price range?!

With the X5, you'll have a little more space for the rear occupants + it has luxury features you won't find in the X3 - like 20 way adjustable comfort seats vs the X3's 14 [?] levels of adjustment.

Actually, not sure why BMW is on your list considering resale is a concern. They depreciate worse than Audi.

"The X3 also retains its value pretty well for a luxury vehicle. According to IntelliChoice estimates, the 2018 X3 will be worth 51.1 percent of its original value in five years ( https://www.motortrend.com/news/18-luxury-vehicles-with-the-lowest-depreciation-rates ). For perspective, the industry average is 47.8 percent, and a 2018 BMW 340i xDrive comes in at 45.8 percent. At the lower end, a Nissan Leaf SV is at 26.79 percent after five years. IntelliChoice gives the 2018 BMW X3 M40i an above average value rating and estimates a $57,795 five-year cost of ownership. A 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 was given a poor value rating, with a $66,770 five-year cost of ownership. In general, luxury vehicles don't retain their value, but if you really need the clout, the X3 won't torture your wallet as much as others."

Not a great deal difference between BMW/Audi/Mercedes SUV depreciation. When I was looking, X3/Q5's of similar year/mileage sold for around the same price.

But yea, definitely check out the Porsche Cayenne. Can't go wrong with that.

Seeing as you've eliminated pretty much all the most reliable and value-retaining brands and left us with a very narrow approved list your choices are basically the Porsche Macan or Cayenne

If you're concerned about depreciation, buy used.

Lexus RX 350. Except you said Toyota/Lexus is out of the question (???).

Porsche Macan or Cayenne.

wow, the Lexus RX 350 is fugly, jesus.

i feel like their "new" design theme they've been running for 10 years or whatever really doesn't suit the brand. they've obviously tried hard to distance themselves from toyota but idk if that was a good thing. they're not going to steal the Germans' customers anyways i think. When people buy a lexus they know what they want and what they're getting.

My brother in law has a GLS C63. He took me for a ride in that beast today, and holly hell is that thing fast. You should get one. He got a 2018, and I was afraid to ask how much it cost.

Its all part of the plan.

Wife says get a porsche, thus he is looking for porsche or something of that level.
Spews BS story about reliability, depreciation and all that **** to throw us off the trail, eliminates the most likely makes that FIT those criteria, and leave you with terribad choices (according to criteria) which makes the original suggestion look like the best option.

Thus, justifying the original choice as the only real option.

Im onto you KAC...just buy the damn porsche lol.

So just to get this straight. I am looking at used.

Right now the only used cars that fit the money requirement are 2018 models of Porsche, BMW or Mercedes. I can go for a used Jaguar F pace but that car is a bit old now. I was looking at Range Rover Sport and most of them are out of budget or have insane mileage / year combination (like 2015/120K KMs).

A used X5 seems like a good option. I am not really looking for decked out cars with options as that will cost a lot more. For models it seems it’s either a

Macan
X3/X5
GLC200-300
GLE400-450 (But older years)
Jaguar F pace
Range Rover Velar
Range Rover Sport (2015-2016 model with high mileage)

My preference would be to stay in the 2018 model range.
