Nvidia shares fall

I really miss the days of a good top of the line graphics card costing sub $400.00...

CPUs, sure. But when your top-of-the-line GPU can't even match NV's 2 year old 1080 there's a problem.

From all the reviews I've seen recently of the RTX cards where the Vega 64 was included, the 1080 non ti and the Vega 64 were pretty much equal, with some games where the 1080 was 2/3 fps faster and others were Vega 64 was 2/3 fps faster, but those differences are insignificant on the bigger picture. Anyone with a Vega 64 or a 1080 is very well served.

Those days are dead, especially now that Nvidia is pretty much monopolizing the top of the line.

But i don't really care, my RX 570 8GB a sub 400€ card, can play all my games at more than 60fps at 1080p, the resolution i personally care for now and some games even recent ones, i can render (not see) at "4k" using virtual super resolution, so i'm happy for what i bought.

Feels a bit like the GeForce 3.
Promises new tech that isn't really implemented in games yet, not a big upgrade over existing cards, actually I think gf3 was getting beaten by the gf2 high end (ti?) In some games.
And when the features became more mainstream in games there were much better second gen hardware out.
The last bit will remain to be seen tho.

But someone had to take the first step with raytracing, just like with pixel shaders..

Geforce 2 Ultra!

Actually the Geforce 3 does seem to be a pretty good comparison. It did slightly beat the 2 Ultra at higher resolutions, but not by a lot. Even at high resolution (1600*1200) it was only 25% faster. (Although in some cases it was actually behind, so a bit worse, but still quite similar to the current situation.)

On another note it's almost laughable going back and looking at graphics cards from that generation: a bare card with a puny little "heatsink fan" that is so small you wonder if it actually even does anything.

When you go back during the 3dfx voodoo and voodoo 2 days, no fans at all.

Yeah, the good old Voodoo 2. 16 bit color goodness! I still remember seeing Quake in 3D accelerated for the first time!

Man, that seems like a lifetime ago. We're all getting old.

The Voodoo 2 was the first time I ever stuck my toes in the water and tried dual GPU configuration. Fun times!

Sadly.. yes, we are getting old..

I had a Voodoo Rush card that didn't work with most games out of the box because it needed a driver update.

We didn't even have an internet connection back then so I had to go to a friends house and spent about an hour and a half tying up their phone line to get the driver download which clocked in at just about over a megabyte.

Sad to hear!

In the early years was four company products I purchased: Matrox, nVidia, 3dfx and Ati. They consisted of: Matrox M3d, Matrox Mystique, Matrox G100, Matrox G200, nVidia Tnt, nVidia, Tnt2, nVidia Geforce 256 Ddr, Geforce 2 Gts, 3dfx Voodoo, 3dfx Voodoo 2 Sli 12 meg with stereo 3d glasses, 3dfx 3000, 3dfx 5500, Ati Radeon Ddr. Had nice memories with all the products and a lot of gaming fun.

Btw, nVidia share price is doing well.

It would probably be best if we don't start bragging about how old we are because some of us go back to monochrome lol :D

Unreal was an amazing experience. I had a voodoo rush at the time, upgraded to monster 3d II sli. That game I have a lot of very fond memories of. The graphics and the sound support definitely blew my hair back.

You throw in one Geforce 3 analogy and the entire thread derails so hard that it´s now barreling full speed down memory lane..

Unreal was a great experience especially seeing that sky for the first time.

On topic, nvidia hit a record high the other day, so there goes the theory of the rtx launch negatively effect share price.
