Quake 2 Enhanced shadow dropped today at Quakecon

Quake 4 wasnt a remake of quake 2, it was a different story in the same war.

Sorry, I was too liberal with my interpretation of a remake. My point was we did go back to its universe, it just wasn't a very good return. I think Raven perhaps wasn't the studio to really do the game justice.

Use that compass thing from your inventory. 25 years ago people would run around in circles until they accidentally stumbled upon the solution, these days you either have a compass or you move on to the next game.

I love that compass. Quake 2 level design is... well from 1997 and part of what games would do back then is makes the levels abit of a puzzle on purpose. It was considered part of the game-play.Personally I absolutely Fing hated this then and hate it every time I go back to games from the era that do this. So that little compass, is awesome imho.

i disagree, i thought quake 4 was excellent. Enjoyed it much more than doom 3. (in reference that they were both reinventions of the brand around the same time)

I've been working my way through the Halo Master Chief collection (as far as 3 at this point). Now those games could really have benefited from a compass. So many times I had no idea where I was supposed to be going or what I was meant to be doing. After them I've had very little difficulty with Q2's layout.

The new campaign from machine games is really, really good, it's basically what quake 2 could have been if they had not been limited by the hardware back in the days.

The encounter design is just so much better in the new episodes, you will face more enemies in each encounter, and the way they use the enemies just feels more doomish, and sometimes they throw fun slaughtermaps at you too, in one of them the first weapon you find is the BFG, and the first enemy encounter in that maps is like 30-something guards/enforcers.

The big weakness of the new episodes are the boss fights though, there's too many of them.

I really hope that machine games is the devteam behind the next quake, they clearly get quake.

Needs a remake not reskin. What is the constant attraction to the same game but with better blocky textures only? Dont get me wrong I loved the Doom and Quake originals but maximum profit minimum effort ?
When Doom was remade (twice actually, Doom3 and Doom 2016) they probably had a better idea on how to deal with that "story" and universe than the somewhat generic sci-fi of Quake. But after Doom and Wolfenstein got modernized, perhaps Quake is actually next on the list and they're not ready to reveal anything yet?

I don't disagree with you. While this is a very nice remaster... Quake 2 is ripe for a remake. The universe created for Quake, starting with 2, is super cool and could be realized now in some pretty amazing ways that where not really possible when Quake 2 was made. We got glimpses of that with Quake 4 and ET:Quake Wars, but man it could be amazing if done now.

Honestly if they ever make Quake 5, I'd prefer they do a new setting. They've done the Lovecraft stuff, space marines, and Vadrigar arena... not sure whether to include the Doom stuff in the series or not. Maybe a space-vikings shooter, in the style of Thor Ragnorok? Or maybe you play as a native american who has to fight dinosaurs and aliens?

its not really lovecraft is it? i thought it was more borg?

Quake 1 is lovecraftian for much of it, Quake 2 is more Borg, yes. A sequel for either could lean into that setting with modern production quality and modern design philosophy - id has certainly grown in that regard.
