Recommend a movie for tonight

Better late than never. Here are a few for your next free evening. I even bothered with a little explanation. Enjoy :)

A Clockwork Orange: Because Burgess hated it. Because it is perfect. Viddy well my brother, viddy well.

Apocalypse Now: Thinking about a snail crawling along the edge of a straight razor. The horror.

Alien: Except for two lame special effects (the android head and the water from the engines of the escape ship), which don't even begin to detract from the film, this movie was flawless and will never date. Plus it had Harry Dean Stanton! The only truly scary movie ever made.

Blade Runner - Director's cut: Ford is an android, and Hauer is Jesus. What more could you want? Well you get a young and beautiful Melanie Griffith as a special bonus. I like the Director's cut better because I don't have to listen to Harrison Ford tell me what's going on the whole time. I prefer to do my own thinking, thank you.

Wild At Heart: This movie has a sublime mix of surreal characters, sex, voodoo, bravado, and outright insanity, all set to the Wizard Of Oz. Throw in Harry Dean Stanton, and you get another piece of cinematic ecstasy.

Doctor Strangelove or How I Stopped Worrying, And Learned To Love The Bomb: Quite possibly the funniest yet still disturbing movies ever made. Peter Sellers in three roles. Slim Pickins riding the bomb to La Puta. The name of the characters. (Premire Kissoff, Colonel Bat Guano, General Jack Ripper). GEORGE C SCOTT creates some of the finest scenes ever acted. The entire film is also basically a spoof of the film Failsafe, which was also quite a riveting drama in it's own right (sorry, not quite on this list though). Mine Furor, I can walk!

The Hustler: It's about pool hustling. It's seedy. It's gritty. It has a sweet tragic moral about winning, and the will to be the best. George C Scott turns in another picture perfect performance. Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason are awesome.

Goodfellas: I've seen this film no less than 40 times, and bits and pieces many times that. It never loses one bit. Joe Pesci is unstoppable! Ever since I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.

Cool Hand Luke: I'm sick of hearing how good The Shawshank Redemption is. This is the sweetest, saddest prison movie ever. No happy endings, and no failure to communicate to the audience. Not to mention, Harry Dean Stanton.

Caddy Shack: Are you kidding? No tricks, no fancy shots, poor perfomances, bad story, base humor. I laugh all the way through, every time. Over the years, it's been quite a few laughs.

Pappillon: Not so much a prison movie as it is one mans revelation of a wasted life, and his perserverence to redeem himself and live again. Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman sparkle. If you thought Hoffman was good in Rain Man, see this and compare.

Midnight Cowboy: The first movie to push the boudaries of homosexuality, prostitution, and poverty out of the cartoonish basement they had before been swept into, and out into the open light. Truly a sad film. Once again Hoffman shines as Ratso Rizzo. The only X rated film to be nominated for any academy awards (Best Picture).

Schindler's List: Perfectly frank in it's sorrow, and perfectly uplifting in it's spirit. Incedible perfomances from Ralphe Finnes, Liam Neeson, and especially Ben Kingsley. You simply could not give this film more Oscars.

Farewell My Concubine: This is the movie that made me want to watch more foreign movies. Everything about it is stunning. When you realize the sword at the end is real, you will cry.

Red Dawn: Actually, this movie sucks! It's one saving grace is Harry Dean Stanton :D

The Thing: Wilfred Brimley is always such a kick.

Delicatessen: French post apocalyptical canabalism, what could be better?

City Of Lost Children: A kids movie.

Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory: There's no Earthly way of knowing, which direction we are going. No, don't, stop.

Meet The Feebles: Proving muppets can be sick ****s too.

The Piano: Well, Holly Hunter is always great.

O' Brother, Where Art Thou: A new favorite, and sure to be a timeless classic.

Fargo: Oh yah.

Raising Arizona: Are you starting to sense a theme?

The Big Lebowski: He's the Dude, Man.

Requiem For A Dream: Ass to ass.

Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels: Let's get British for a bit.

Snatch: Bricktop! Nerds can be evil too.

Trainspotting: That's better than a stiff cock any day of the week, I tell ya.

Shallow Grave: Ewan is good.

Monty Python And the Holy Grail: This is actually a blatant omission from my previous list. Let's just say neet, and leave it at that.

Monty Python's Meaning Of Life: It's only waffer thin.

West Side Story: When you're a Jet.

The King And I: As long as we're on musicals, this one takes the cake, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

The Producers: Not many people know this, but the Furor was a wonderful dancer.

Young Frankestein: That's Frankenstein!

Blazing Saddles: The sherrif's a (((DONG))).

The Sugarland Express: Spielbergs first and second best. Goldie Hawn was never so good ever again.

M: This was the first film noir, and has been ripped off more than you can imagine. Watch it, and you'll go, I've seen this before somewhere.

Pulp Fiction: Noir to the ninth. This one could also go up above, but what the hey. I can't remember every movie.

Arsenic And Old Lace: Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, and Cary Grant are all outdone by two little old ladies.

Dead Man: Spellbinding and funny.

The Outlaw Jose Wales: It's Clint!

Unforgiven: A rare sad western.

The Road Warrior: A rare post apocalyptic western.

Westworld: A strange western, with out of control androids.

Silent Running: Greenpeace gone bad.

Eraserhead: There is simply no way to describe this film. No drugs required.

Taxi Driver: You talkin' to me?

Clerks: Thirty-seven????

Ferris Buehler's Day Off: I don't like isms either.

Chinatown: Jack at his best.

The Shining: Jack at his worst.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest: Jack out of his mind.

Angelheart: Often overlooked.

Akira: That's animation!

Heavy Metal: That too is animation.

Parents: Everyone needs to eat.

I think that has to be the best one-line description for that movie. :D That movie almost made me sick the first time I saw it, but it's pretty good. Really powerful stuff. It's probably not as good on a small screen, though.

The Game: awesome movie with so many twists

The Stupids: if you feel like jumping off a cliff, this will encourage it: to the extreme.

Since this has turned into a "list your favorite movies" thread, I will reiterate my two favorite movies of all time: Contact and Memento. I don't need to say anything about them; they speak for themselves.

If you're into mind-benders, get "Momento".
Agreed 'momento' was really cool! I think 'The Boiler Room' was another underated movie or 'Lock Stock & 2 smoking barrels' was better than its americanized counterpart 'snatch', Which was still quite good. Do not get 'Faust' which sucked truckloads of ass!

You folks need to learn how to spell Memento. It's not the spanish word for "moment," it's a thing to remember something by.

Gnognugs: brillant, excellent and sweet movie list.

Let me add two: Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen (1989). They are not an official Monty Python movies, but they were made by the great Terry Gilliam.

In theaters: Go see K-Pax - an interesting film.
On video - go see brain donors or planes trains and automobiles if you want a laugh.

If you want to think a bit, and are looking for the antithesis of brain dead action movies with explosions, shallow plots, and big boobs, watch Last Supper. My favorite movie!

Theatre: Go see Bandits. Great movie, funny and lots of fun to watch.

Video: Snatch is one of my currnet favorites. For a good but depressing one, see A Simple Plan.

Thank you :)

I'm sure I left out a few.

Gilliam, excellent! Brazil, Twelve Monkeys.

Bruce Willis (underrated), The Sixth Sense, Die Hard

That Hans guy, Dogma

Matt and Ben.... Maybe not.

Mentioning Delicatessen reminded me of this one:

Ravenous
It's a man eat man world

There are too many good movies that people should see. There is too many movies I should see but never seem to have a chance or time enough.
