Funny thing is that it wasn't even hard on the wallet! The high end parts were usually $399 to $499!

It sure hit me harder in the wallet back then!

I was spending a lot more on computer hardware than I had any business to back in those days not having a settled career, still in college, etc. :p

Completely forgot about it. I used to change my video cards like I changed pants back in the day. I am sure I tried all versions of 6XXX, 7XXX, 8XXX, 9XXX and X800 and X1800 series.

Nvidia GTX 780 SLI
Nvidia GTX 750Ti
Nvidia GTX 980Ti
Nvidia GTX 1080Ti
Nvidia RTX 2080Ti

Let see if I can remember them all...

RIVA TNT 2
GeForce 2 GTS
Radeon 9700 Pro
Radeon 9800 XT
GeForce 6800GT (Returned due to terrible shimmering issue)
Radeon X800 XT
Radeon X1950XT
Radeon 4870 512MB Crossfire
GeForce 7900GT
Radeon HD 7970
Radeon R9 290 X
GeForce GTX 780Ti
GeForce GTX 970
GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

Think this is about accurate. I excluded some dumb KAC style decisions of swapping between AMD and nvidia multiple times during the same generation. That jump from GeForce 2 GTS to Radeon 9700 Pro will be something I will never forget.

The 6xxx and 7xxx series from Nvidia used angle dependent filtering and had shimmering and mip map artifacts with default. By moving to high quality helped but still had undersampling issues. The filtering issues were all solved with the 8xxx series.

Back then on NV, if you enabled Anisotropic Filtering you had to clamp Negative LOD Bias too, otherwise you got shimmering.
With the clamp engaged the quality was as good as ATI.

Nowadays the driver auto engages the clamp if you enable AF.

AFAICR:

s3 virge
ATI mach 32 (bit later added voodoo 1)
Matrox Mystique (bit later added voodoo2)
Riva TNT
Riva TNT2
Geforce TI 4200
ATI radeon 9700
ATI Radeon 9800 pro (kept that one ~5 years)
ATI Radeon 1900XT
ATI Radeon HD 5870
AMD Radeon HD 6950 (this one lasted over 6 ~years)
AMD Radeon R290
AMD Radeon RX 480
AMD Vega 64

The 2 bad cards in all that lineup were the geforce ti4200 and the radeon hd 5870... Otherwise I had a pretty good experience.

I remember 3dgpu vaquely. Remember posting first at 3dfxgamers and my first gaming/posting friend was named Wavey.

I looked up to Dave Barron, Kristof Beets and Anthony Tan.
