The "I want to buy a 30x0 card from a Rager" thread

Waits for the inevitable, “Buyer claimed I sent a rock in a shoe box and PayPal refunded all his money”, thread/post. :bleh:

Yeah, sold it on fleaBay. I had no idea their fees went up as much as they did. Also they took PayPal out of the equation and debit/credit your bank account directly now. Takes several days to process ACH transactions, of course. They hold the money until they get confirmation of delivery. I can see how it might protect the buyers more, but it sure is inconvenient for sellers.

Yup buyer will post a legit video of him opening a shoe box and finding a rock. :bleh:

That article is bullshit

are they all and it is Palit Microsystems they are the ones putting this out are they BS :hmm:

Palit reps point to independent tests carried out on mining cards, which suggest that you can expect a 10% degradation in GPU performance for each year of service in a 24/7 cryptocurrency operation. Which seems like a pretty good yardstick to use when considering your options in the second-hand market; even if a given card actually works when you get hold of it, there's a good chance it won't be operating at its peak.

Bill, think about what Palit gains by encouraging buyers to not buy used cards.

Additional sales.

Palit doesn't make money off of miners selling their GPUs when they're finished with them. Palit loses sales when individuals purchase used mining cards.

It makes perfect sense to push this narrative.

The only way I could see performance degradation of 10% a year (which is a ridiculous claim) is from thermal paste/thermal pads degrading and causing thermal throttling -- in turn reducing performance. That's an easy remedy and something that should be checked any time you buy a used GPU. Typically, mining operations run the GPUs at low power usage, so while they run 24/7, they're usually run at 55% or lower of their typical max power limit. I'd say gaming for hours on end at 450watts is worse for the silicon and more likely to cause degradation than a longer period of time at 225watts.

don't think I would buy anything off ebay now

Nvidia and AMD should just add detection to the drivers for mining and void the warranty by serial number after about 24 hours of mining

Linus and other people already proved it's bullshit.

Palit are either making **** cards that die often, or they're trying to discourage second hand buying because lost sales.

Any performance degredation would be due to thermal paste need replacing or thermal pads, which is simple enough.

Linus tested a card that was 4 years old non stop mining, and it has exactly the same clockrate as a card thats almost never been used. sooooo yeah :bleh: fud.

Whether you'd buy one or not has nothing to do with the article. There is no proof that mining causes "10% performance reduction PER YEAR" other than thermal pad/paste degradation causing thermal throttling, which is completely normal due to aging.

It's just not how silicon works. The fact they didn't release any of the data from the testing is proof enough

For like a $200 GPU I wouldn't be that concerned about mining. But for a really expensive one, or basically anything right now with inflated prices, I would be a little bit wary.

I am any time I buy used, that's always good advice  Most folks I know take exceptionally good care of their hardware, but some just....don't.

I'm more concerned of the potential lack of care in mining farms than individuals that may take more care.

this

lack of proper air conditioning cutting corners to save money running cards too hot
warehouse environment bugs and spiders love hardware

bugs crawling up the LEGO card stands on the floor :bleh:

I don’t live in a shite redneck outback country.

Also any gay got a 3070 for parting (non LHR). Hit me. I just realized I got space for 2 more cards on my rig.
