THE Official Steam Deck Thread

Another thing really putting me off is how the Steam Deck is largely designed around SteamOS, which is sub par compared to Windows for gaming and it is being shown the "deck verified" does not guarantee the game will run properly from beginning to the end.

I've had mine for almost a week now and the Arch Linux based OS has been amazing. I have yet to find a game that hasn't worked, including games that aren't yet certified as Deck Ready. I've installed 3rd party launchers (Heroic for GOG and Epic and UConnect for Ubisoft), I've got emulators running, and the whole experience has been fantastic. The only negative for me is the battery life. It's not like I really need to be playing it while it's not plugged in, but if I were, it wouldn't last too long playing AAA games (though you can queeze quite a bit out by forcing FSR and runing a game at 540p upscaled double the battery life).

Anyway, glad you got out of the way for someone else if you didn't want it, but I think saying the OS is sub-par is short sighted. It's pretty cool in my opinion.

Seems like they're pretty slow shipping these things. I got my order in on Aug 8, and the status still says "Shipping soon".

I ordered a 1tb microsd, and that arrived in 1 day. Where's my damn steam deck valve?!?

That seems about right. I think that they send out the notice when the batches arrive in the US and then it takes about a week or so to go to the distribution centre, and then you'll get them shipped soon after. Mine sat at least a week in processing or something before it budged and that was back in April.

I'm almost right next to where they ship them out, mine just went out tonight and is going to be here tomorrow. Put order in on the 11th.

Sat down and played thru Vanishing of Ethan Carter last night. Never played it before, I'd say its a perfect game for the Steam Deck. It does have random FPS drops later in the game but for the most part its 50+fps the entire time. My first game beaten on the deck (5 hours to beat in one sitting). I was shocked I had no hand cramps, have fairly large hands. With the Nintendo Switch I'd have to take a break after a couple hours .

Steam deck looks neat, but I'm going to wait until they release the next revision of the deck with updated specs in a few years I'm thinking. By then, the bugs will be out of the system and performance will be better.

I think SteamDeck is actually the first product in what will become a sea-change in PC gaming. Thus, its destined to be a bit short-lived, under-powered, and sortof a novelty piece for my collection.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a new version of SteamDeck announced early next year, with alot more power, and a 1080p screen that supports freesync. But that's how things go. The current SteamDeck is an early-adopter product, and it's not super expensive.

I'm hoping they'll release a non-portable SteamBox with alot more power, perfect for streaming VR content or playing conventional PC games on SteamOS. Maybe push the price to $600-700? That's a product that will change PC gaming forever.

Everything going SOC is going to produce a lot more e-waste though.

Maybe. Do consoles create more e-waste? If PC gaming moves toward a model where your hardware stays good for 5 years before needing to be replaced, for example, does that create more ewaste.

Yes, a total system replacement vs a gpu/cpu upgrade is more wasteful.

Played with mine a bit tonight. It's neat. For certain games, it's as easy as using a console. Other games require more manual tweaking. It's really a product for enthusiasts.
