THE Official Steam Deck Thread

The steam deck rocks. I just played Wipeout on the PS3, Mario Kart on the WiiU, Tetris Effect from Epic Games, and Rocket League from Steam on one device. LOL

Oddly, the systems I need to tweak are NES / SNES / Sega Genesis emulation settings. It's a tad slow, which means I have a setting wrong somewhere.
The Wipeout HD to Mario Kart (Wii or newer) has been the foil of every precursor to the steam deck. Wipeout is a little slow, working on optimizing it, but playable. Mario Kart 8 is full speed.

Now I can work on some of my backlog. so many games I've gotten over the years, now I can play every night on the couch while my wife watched her shows. :)

So far I'm mostly playing indie titles and older games that use a controller. It's very good for that, and my back-log is going to really enjoy this device.

I tried out Doom Eternal, which runs very smooth... but I just can't imagine playing though without a mouse & keyboard. Those little touch pads don't really do it justice... I liked my SteamPad better for the touch pads. I want to try hooking it up to a monitor, m+k, and try it that way.

I've got the Heroic launcher set up, with my GoG & Epic accounts... but I need to figure out how to configure non-steam games to run well. I'm hoping that this will be the ultimate GoG device.

I still need to dig in and figure out how to install emulators, sourceports, etc. This will be an awesome device for Doom mods and stuff like that, once I get it figured out.

Also want to install one of those new Mario 64 builds.

So yeah, tons of stuff to play with. It's going to be a massive time-sink.

I don't have a Steam Deck, but I do my gaming on Linux.

I never tried the Heroic Launcher. Maybe it is a better option. But what I use is Lutris for my GoG games.

There are a lot of user-made installers for GoG games, that set up WINE, and other options to get the game running properly.

Since you mentioned Doom, I did just recently play through all the old Doom games through GZDoom, with the fancy texture packs. For example, here's the page with the installer script for the original Doom: https://lutris.net/games/doom-1993/

I'm not sure if using the Steam Deck will be more difficult. I know there were some issues with Lutris needing to be set up through flatpak.

Valve already talking about the next iteration of Steam Decks and how they will have better hardware and more robust features.

This is why I'm waiting for the next version before I jump to the Deck.

This version looks "ok", but I'm just not impressed enough with the graphics hardware to justify the cost.

I think 2024 would be at the earliest we'd see one, spec wise. Release maybe toward end of that year or 2025.

Steam Deck and Docking Station Now In Stock and Available

Steam Deck and Docking Station Now In Stock and Available

Better late than never!

We're happy to announce that with today's batch of order emails, we have completed our reservation queue. We are now in-stock and Steam Deck is available for purchase! It's been more than a year since Steam Deck was first announced. Since day one we've been dealing with numerous supply chain issues and component shortages. While the team worked to resolve these issues and catch up with demand, we implemented a reservation system. This system enabled customers to save their spot in line without having to worry about refreshing pages, fighting scripts, or battling bots.

The team has worked hard over the past year to address shortages and solve logistics issues, and because of these efforts we're now manufacturing and shipping Steam Decks at our highest rate ever. Despite the ever-increasing reservation rate, we've been able to beat our shipping estimates, and as of today, finally complete the queue.

Having said all that, our production, processing, and shipping bandwidth is still finite. If order volume for a specific model of Steam Deck grows higher than our ability to ship it in a timely manner, delivery estimates will lengthen, and at a certain point we'll flip back into reservation mode until we're able to catch up. Just as before, customers will have their place in line saved, and they'll receive an email when there order is ready. Once we've caught up and served all outstanding reservations, we'll flip back into taking orders. We're excited to reach this important milestone, and will be shipping these out to you as fast as we can.

Continue loving this thing. And for video playback or desktop use the battery life is very very good. I used it as a secondary PC when working remote and didn't even have to plug it in after a full workday.

I just ordered the official Dock for my Steam Deck :D. Wish I had it last weekend when I visited my brother who had a projector.

But I did give it a good run for travelling and it help up extremely well handling most games. Only games that had issues was BF2042 because Dice hadn't made Easy Anti-cheat work with the Steam Deck, and Grounded, because it has an annoying Xbox Live web login form that's invisible on the Steam Deck.

I relented. When they announced there was no longer a wait list, I got more interested...and bought the 512mg version. Everybody I hear from say it's badass...so now I wait for the arrival.

I figured if I wanted one to get it now or else come the holidays it would be sold out perpetually again.

I relented as well. Mine should arrive tomorrow. Decided on the base since I already have a 1 TB MicroSD ready for it.

Do they let you know when they ship the item? It said two weeks and it's already been a week and I've heard nothing. I can find no info on how to see if it's shipped or not. There's surprisingly little information on delivery.

EDIT: Figured it out, you have to go to steam purchase history and click the steam deck and then it gives info.

I had the same concern at first, but then I checked out the second email they sent me (titled We're preparing your items to ship) and it had a tracking link so I didn't have to go back into my account and the purchase history. The second email came in roughly a day after I ordered the Deck.

Got my deck today, it's really better than i imagined. I think my switch is now just gonna be a halloween decoration :bleh:

Do you like the size of it? Its a clunker for sure. OLED switch also obviously has a nice screen too.

While i would love an OLED screen, honestly it feels better to me than the switch while holding. Just the weight and size of it is distributed so well, that gripping the controls dont feel like they do on the flat switch. Excited for deck 2 whenever it comes out, bt this will hold me over nicely till then.

Everyone seems to love the weight and size and I cant get over it  It sure feels well built cause it feels weighty but I cant imagine myself holding it longer than an hour.

I havent had long gaming sessions with it yet, kind of just have it sitting around.

Never got any e-mail beyond the initial steam purchase confirmed message, I had to go hunting for the info (which is very strange to begin with). According to fed ex, I should get it today so we'll see.

I find the Steamdeck more comfortable to use for longer gaming sessions than the Switch due to the proper grips on the back of the Steamdeck, I've found the flat back of the Switch means it doesn't really fit into my hands as well.

I'm surprised how well the Steamdeck works and it's great not just being able to play games from my existing library but also knowing that I can buy new games and have them available on a desktop, laptop or handheld especially being to sync between them all.
