Looks like they wanted a change of scenery for what is kind of nioh 3, or at least a nioh-like.

Imagine a game by Team NINJA (famous for stellar action games like Nioh and NINJA GAIDEN) set in a dark fantasy version of China’s Three Kingdoms period. When Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was announced at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022, the idea of slashing warlords and demons alike with a new combat system based on Chinese martial arts made us pretty excited. But the teaser trailer left us wondering how it will actually play.

Luckily, IGN was able to sit down with Team NINJA’s key members to find out more.

“As a studio, we’ve always been known for games that challenge the player, but that can’t be done without responsive controls and high playability. In that regard, Wo Long is no different from our previous titles, but this time we’ve turned to Chinese martial arts as a new style of combat,” producer Fumihiko Yasuda explained.

It's also going to be perfect for game pass™ on day one.

Hmm, fresh new game IP from Team Ninja. I was wondering what they were going to do. Some points from the dev interview video:

-Setting is early Three Kingdoms era China
-Action is "speedier" than Nioh
-Devs hint at potential morale system
-Still within the Souls-like genre
-Jump ability added
-Not open world, still linear with isolated missions to play
-Possibly not as much loot collection as before with Nioh
-Similar multiplayer/co-op elements as Nioh 2
-Character creation system like in Nioh 2
-Human and supernatural enemy types again

Not sure how I will feel about a slimmed down loot system, as it was one of the shining moments of the Nioh games for sure that kept me playing for so long. We'll have to see though.

I really want to see gameplay footage. Hopefully we get that soon.

I need it to be different enough to not be more of the same. I have probably 800 hours between both Nioh games, and it was great, but this looks close enough to be a Nioh 2 DLC or total conversion. That’s not bad really, but it’s not fallen far enough from Nioh.

ER, and now more Returnal got me thirsty for different game types again, so this is a wait and see for me, for now.

I don't know. What i got from what the devs were saying sounds like the combat is going to be pretty different.

We'll see though, which is why i want some gameplay footage.

I’d probably be better off seeing footage myself…..before running my mouth

Looking forward to it now.

My only real request for the game isn’t based on anything that was said anywhere, but keep TN games free from invasions please. I’m only saying that because another dev in another completely different game added invasions, and I never thought they would. Hopefully TN steers clear of that crap.

Other than that hopefully moot point, I hope it’s unique enough to stand on it’s own.

I don't mind if they add an invasion mechanic, but just keep it totally optional.

Also no gameplay penalties if you don't enable the option.

 It probably won’t be there anyway. I think I was scarred by seeing it in the last game I played lol.

Early 2023. Hmm, guess its closer than I thought. :sherlock:

Have to say it looks really cool, and combat is super fast (unlike some other Souls-like developer's games). I slowed down the video in several spots just to see the animations of what the player is doing to dodge attacks and man, it looks awesome. I think the combat in this one is going to be really exhilarating. Can't wait.

Even they’ve improved Nioh’s even a little, it will be stellar. I’m looking forward to the story as well. I know you’re not into that as much as I am, but I loved the little bits of history and story in the Nioh games. I’d love more of it here.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the story in these kind of games. I just don't follow them completely, but I pay attention to small bits here and there. To me their purpose is to just add a nice backdrop theme to the gameplay.

It's also a bit easier to get involved/care about the story in these games as team ninja does traditional story telling instead of forcing players to read item descriptions.
