Bloodborne - PS4 Exclusive from Hidetaka Miyazaki

Hmm it doesn't ring a bell. I may have missed it but I have not finished exploring that whole area of Forbidden Woods past the windmill where the first shortcut is.

It's past there (if I remember right). Did you miss the secret cave leading to Iosefka's Clinic? There really is a ton of stuff in the Forbidden Woods.

I did find that cave. Wasnt that hidden. But i didn't bother exploring it. I could tell it was going to lead to a new area and wanted to focus on the Woods.

Maybe I'll come back to it later but most likely wont. I think I'm just going to focus on the main path of the game and skip anything optional.

There is a lot of optional stuff. That's what shocked me when I went through a guide. You'll miss a lot. Some seem impossible to find without the guide or pure luck. Plus, you won't get enough material or experience to fully upgrade your character either. The dungeons are all totally optional. I felt they were too annoying to go through fully, so I did some of them and then skipped the rest. Some of the best ruins are in there but they were too generic and uninteresting for me. One of the few misses in the game. But, the optional story levels in game are amazing and worth adventuring through. Every single one was unique and challenging with interesting bosses.

I'll see how it goes. Not saying I wont change my fickle mind but as of this point I still don't really like the game enough to want to spend more time with it than I have to.

This ordeal has however made me contemplate I new Sekiro playthrough though. I really miss the parry focused sword combat of that game and would rather spend my time with that.

It's really the exact same thing. Except Bloodborne is much more forgiving. I kind of like the bang of the gun as it gives more positive feedback you got your parry off or not. I pull off 500% more parries in Bloodborne than Sekiro. And they felt more satisfying. I don't think you've given it a chance. You don't really need to level your blood skills up unless you want to use some of the more powerful guns. But, that'd be entirely different build altogether.

I actually do not like the parry mechanic in Bloodborne at all. Its way too easy, I don't like guns in Souls, and it gets quite boring after the 10th enemy in a row I do it to. The only enemy I still find tricky to parry in BB are the Executioners. Those guys are fun to fight against. Everything else though is just boring. Compared to Sekiro its no contest, where the moment to moment stealth and samurai sword play is just second to none, IMO. Superb parry/riposte mechanic there.

Its not really a debate I want to have. They are both incredible games and I don't want to pit them against each other. It just comes down to personal preference, and since the day Sekiro was first released I was in love with the refined sword play of that game.

As for BB, I just finished the Forbidden Woods boss and now on to Byrgenwerth. Even though was a fairly standard gank squad fight I did enjoy the Shadow of Yharnam boss. I thank the devs for putting that huge tombstone thing in the boss room. Used it to great effect in separating them one at a time. Then on the last one when he started casting the giant snake summon spell I would just transform the Ludwig's blade to one-handed and high DPS him to stop his casting. He only got the snake summon off once. :D

Nice, did you find the stamina rune too? I wouldn’t leave that area without it. It’s called anti-clockwise metamorphosis.

Yep i did. I think i got two actually, unless I'm misremembering. But not sure if that makes sense. Damn i forgot to check that before i shut down. Will confirm later.

[EDIT] OK, i see what i got.

Clockwise Metamorphosis (HP) and Anti-Clockwise Metamorphosis (stamina).

I didn’t spend as many points on stamina so that one is a good one. There’s one more in an optional area and even a better one in the dungeons that I skipped. I pushed arcane up to 18 to use the Auger instead. That thing is OP. My build was to push Vitality to 40 / Strength and Skill to 25. Worked well with Ludwig’s blade.

If you are skipping optional content you are nearly end game. So, you only have a few more options.

Wow already?

How does this game handle how you start NG+? After rolling the credits does it give you the option to stay in the current playthrough to explore, or does it force you into NG+

You go straight NG+

You’re much better off doing the DLC. NG+ doesn’t offer much.

I think the later. You know who the final boss is right? If not, the doll will tell you after beating Rom. Don’t beat him until you want game to end. Also, you need all 3 umbilical cords if you want the secret end boss too.

OK thanks that's good to know. Yeah I do already know who the final boss is (and secret end boss), and I was already aware of needing to get at least 3 umbilical cords to get the secret boss.

I did watch some random gameplay videos of Bloodborne over the past few years before I started playing, so I was privy to a lot of the game's content before hand. In my mind the sequence of everything is all jumbled though. I don't have a sense of what are the main bosses vs optional, and I'm not familiar with any of the locations after Byrgenwerth. I'm actually a bit surprised to learn I am near end game. Quite short. I doubt I have been playing for more than 20 hours yet, so maybe I will do some exploring after all while I'm still enjoying it.

You’ve got a good bit of content left. Don’t leave the lecture hall without visiting both nightmare areas….they’re both obvious, but it’s easy to get stuck in the main end game area and forget the other.

Cool, I'll see how it goes. For the moment I am on a bit of a high with the game and enjoying it again. I'm focused on the main path but I'll go where the wind takes me so to speak.

Even though I've aired some grievances on what I don't like about it I am still of course planning to finish this playthrough and reserve judgment until I do. Its a Souls game after all, so even with complaints its still of course better than 99% of other games I could be playing.

There is a ton of optional content and bosses. The short list off of the top of my head is:

  • Upper Cathedral Ward
  • Lecture Hall
  • Upper Lecture Hall
  • Cainhurst Castle
  • 2 Nightmare levels
  • Hypogean Gaol
  • Yahar'gul, Unseen Village

You may have been to some of these and I know I am missing some. But, there is a huge amount of optional content. All of it unique and good. Skipping it probably also means missing about 6 - 10 boss battles too.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking once I finish the main game I'll consult the Bloodborne wiki sites to learn about the all the side optional stuff. I'm sure I'll do a new playthrough at some point.

Just beat the Rom spider boss. Byrgenwerth turned out to be a rather small area. I was expecting a larger city to navigate especially after the Woods area which was pretty big.

Killed Rom on second attempt, so he wasn't too bad. But yes very annoying fight where I had to do constant running all over the place, especially towards the end when he was spamming his arcane attacks. They weren't too hard to avoid though if I just started running or rolling away right before they started falling. Seems the trick to survival in that fight was understanding the timing of his arcane and AOE attacks. Once I did they were all easy to avoid.

I did good damage to him also unlike some of the earlier boss fights where I was doing chip damage. So that's a welcome change. At level 50 now with +6 Ludwig's so I should hope so!
