Further NVIDIA "optimizations" for 3DMark03?

Quack2 - The Filtering:
TechReport moves forward in showing us more optimizations in 3DMark03. And quite possibly another reason why the benchmark should not be used by any journalist or company doing hardware evaluation. I don't know whether to puke, laugh, or cry.

Typical response from Kyle, blaming 3dmark03 rather than the company that made the 'optimisations'. Nevermind that these 'optimisations' could also be being done in 'GAME' benchmarks and therefore should game benchmarks not be used for hardware evaluation also.
I actually hope the splinter cell anomaly turns out to be another of nVidias 'optimisations' then he might get his head out of nVidias ass long enough to realise that if graphics cards makers had integrity and didn't do these 'optimisations' then there wouldn't be a problem with any benchmark.
Just because they can 'optimise' doesn't mean they should, but because nVidias GFFX has a poor architecture and has trouble competing with the ATi cards, they took it on themselves to make a mockery of all benchmarking, and in doing so have probably kicked themselves in the teeth, as it is going to be hard to trust any reviews or benchmarks anymore.
The only way I can see that reviews sites are going to have to do to make fair benchmarks is probably not to use any on the rails benchmarking at all, but to actually play a game, and at certain points stop and take a fps reading, repeat at maybe 10-20 other points and then work out an average of all fps results collated and repeat for all other cards. All because of nVidia having a bad card:bleh:.

nVidia cheating again, imagine that.

Kyle,

Say what you will bro, but if looks like a duck, 'Quacks' like a duck, and walks like a duck......... It must be a fu**ing duck.

I can't believe you've still got your lips that far up [N]Vidia's @$$, blaiming this one on 3D Mark 03 again huh? (rhetorical question) What does [N]vidia have to do before you can admit to us that deep down inside yourself, in places you don't like to talk about, you know your beloved [N]Vidia CHEATED? Come on man, get a grip and tell it like it is! Even if 3DMark is irrelevant in your opinion, [N]Vidia is still CHEATING to score higher on this irrelevant benchmark, so does that also make [N]Vidia irrelevant?

The proctologist called, he found you head.

Wow this is going to be fun, by the time you factor in all of the specific cheats nVIdia doubled their 3dmark 2K3 score.....

Kyle, the proctologist called, he found your head and, unfortunately for you, there is nothing he can do to remove it from your ***.

Please let it stop.

Please.

Pretty please.

I'm tired of seeing this crap.

Every freaking week, there's something new.

nVidia this, nVidia that... Why can't they just say "Okay ATi made a good product that we can't beat right now. But let us hunker down for a bit and we'll be sure to make something way better in about eight months. We are going to transfer funds from the PR department to the Research and Development department in order to do this properly."

Seems like a no-brainer to me. But no, they want to lie, cheat, steal, and threaten their way to the top...

The funny thing to me is they just seem like their own worst enemy on this sort of thing! How in the hell did they think they were going to slide this one by!!!

On the brightside, it gave me something to talk to me new special friend Brian Burke about this morning by e-mail.... (Me likey-likes Brian Burke, he's fun to trade e-mails with. Try it and see, at [email protected] ;) )

Anyone see the Nvnews headline about this yet? "More NVIDIA Tweaks". Tweaks.

I think my brain just cramped up.

So let me get this straight. ATI does .exe detection which winds up reducing the quality of a handful of textures(and there's still debate if it was intentional or not, but that's not the point) and that's a "cheat". But when Nvidia does .exe detection that winds up disabling or at least reducing the AF level, it's a "tweak"?!?!? Hypocritical much?

I wholeheartedly agree. This is not even funny any more, nor laughable, it's dispising, plainly disgusting, and ulitmately demonstrating very little respect towards the end users.

I've always been partial to ATi as far as I remember (as far as I become interested in modern day computers :bleh: ), but I recognized nVidia could make fine cards, even got one. Now it's gonna take a frozen day in Hell before I consider giving them a single dime again.

It's really, REALLY bad 3DFX and Matrox aren't around here any more.

Well, yeah. Hey, nVidia is going to strong-arm the first site that uses the word "cheat" to describe this cheat like a mofo...nVnews is definately NOT rushing in line for that distinction.

(Over at EB I called 'em "Driver 'surprises' " to protect me own arse. Screw it, it's just semantics...we all know what the what is. ;) )

Nvidia obviously forgot the first rule of holes.

First rule of holes :
When you are in one, stop digging.

As an ex-ditch digger I have to politely disagree. The first rule of digging holes for me was to be very, VERY careful for buried power lines (I was an electrician) and the second was to stay hydrated. ;)

This article at least mentions the Quake/Quack fiasco too, so seems to have a bit more credibility than otherwise.

I'm glad to see another site take up the cause, as so few have been willing to go against Nvidia on this.

Still, the fact that ATI tipped them is kind of upsetting, but I suppose fanboys will just love the "payback".

Good lord, if I had this to do all over again, maybe I'd go buy a Matrox Perhelia... <GRIN>

There's a difference between Quake/Quack than 3DMark/3DMerk (dork, jerk, whatever).

ATI's next driver release brought back the IQ as well as a performance increase.

I doubt nVidia could release a driver that would provide the quality of 8x AF and get anywhere near those 1000 3DMarks back.

Of course, nVidia will probably just throw around some money/lawsuits and this will be called an optimization too.

Makes me wonder how long they've been doing this sort of crap. :hmm: I just might do some benchies with 2001 renaming exe, etc... 3d analyzer might be a useful tool also :D

GF4 with 3x.xx drivers
Nature = 45~ FPS

GF4 with 4x.xx drivers
Nature = 74~ FPS

:hmm:

If you think about it..........ATI effectively has a monopoly on the high end graphics card market now :hmm:....

Well, I just got done benching me GF4ti4400 at max settings in both mark & muck and got only a 1 point difference...just like on me 9700 Pro.

Doh! <smacks own head HARD!>

I'm running the bloody 30.82s on Blue right now since they're the last set of dets that works right with her...I should probably re-run those benchies with the 44.03 set... :bleh:

I think i'm going to experiment renaming game EXE's, like splinter cell etc... see what happens...
