Hell by the time all the CHEATS are discovered, the FX series may be able to compete with the Radeon 7000 PCI line of cards on an equal basis.

It is very sad to see a decent company using cheap tricks like that ... especially after ATi tried to do that not quite a long time ago. Its like in kindergarten, really...why, oh WHY. Well, I'm not saying I like nVidia better than ATi, in fact I dont, but its still sad. Company was trustful, and after these screw-ups they will have to do a LOT to regain their ratings.
Whats sad is I pop over to nvnews and people are trying to justify this. If people were smart they would write nvidia and say we aren't purchasing any cards made with the nv3x chips because all of this. You would see how fast nvidia would come out with the nv40 that fixes this problem(or a possible better cheat). As long as people support companies shaddy dealings they only stiffle innovation. Everyone should be outraged at this companies action, especially nv fans since its the card they choose to purchase.
I guess its just me, but I'd rather have a card that does what its creator claims it does. In the end nvidia can't live up to its own goals...it claimed it can do fp32 so it wouldn't need to meet the minimum of dx9. If thats the case, why even bother putting fp16 in, if the card is that powerful?
I would respect nvidia a whole hell of a lot more if they just said we screwed teh pooch and this, but the nv40 will right these mistakes. Not try to cheat or discredit a program that only a short time ago was one of their benchmarks of choice.

Why can't they make cheating drivers for the Geforce2 series? The smoke wouldn't lag me up in Counterstrike as much if they "helped" with their "drivers"

Anyway, next card is gonna be Radeon 9800 Pro, once I'm sure it won't do the freaky stuff that Radeon 9700 Pro (rev 3) did with my KT400. I can't go back to nVidia knowing how questionable the new drivers are on new hardware, least my Ti4600 isn't affected by these new NV30 specific cheats (assuming they're NV30 specific, since why would they wanna bother cheating with Ti4600?).

I suspect that *all* the Nvidia game benchmarks for the 5900 are now subject to this same method of cheating, namely changing the AA method (for instance) on the fly, regardless of what the user has set in the driver properties.
If true, this completely invalidates *any* benchmarking whatsoever, whether with 3dmark or games, as the driver is lying to the user about what is really being displayed on the screen. This makes it impossible to compare apples to apples.
I don't even see how you would go about proving such a thing is occurring. How do you look at an image and tell if it *really* is using 8x AA like you set, or if it's really displaying 6x on the screen?

Ya know... This cheating is happening so much now it's not even a surprise. I'm starting to agree with these people about how useless synthetic benchmakrs can be. If Nvidia, ATI, or any other company is cheating like this we all might as well throw away our benchmarks, because they aren't doing anything for us except give false results.

This whole thing just plain amazes me!!!! the really great thing is ATi are playing no part in this unlike nvidia who rubbished ATi's drivers and released stuff about ATi cheating and a program to detect it (g1ts)
Why don't they just hold there hands up and say the following words
"Yes our nv3x chips suck, yes we did cheat in our drivers, yes we're really sorry we won't do it again, we'll stick to standards and do things properly from now on and next time we'll release a gfx card that is full DX9 standard, and we will also stop the PR ********ting"
Yeah your all right the real nvidia supporters are the ppl who don't know how these various techniques work, as they've never seen it working correctly, but yet again the minority shouts the loudest and we all listen and the ppl who are none to wise follow blindly
